John Brooke Atkins, Sr.

Salisbury-John Brooke Atkins Sr., 71 died Saturday July 5th, 2014. He was born in Annapolis, Md. son of the late Nevett Brooke Atkins and Elizabeth Parsons Atkins.

John graduated in 1960 from Bethesda Chevy Chase High School, attended Wesley College in Dover, DE. and University of Maryland. He served on Wesley College's Alumni Board and was president in 1988. He was selected 2006 Alumnus of the year. John taught Industrial Maintenance classes at Wor Wic Tech and received an Award of Appreciation for 12 years of service.

John was the Plant Engineer at Webcraft in Salisbury and NJ for 22 years. He was a Certified Plant Engineer and Certified Energy Manager retiring in 2006.

He devoted many volunteer hours at St. Peter's Episcopal Church serving in administrative and facility support capacities. John joyfully supervised the return of the bell on loan at Wicomico County Court House to the Church's bell tower after 108 years.

John joined West Side Wicomico Lions in 1981 serving as president in 1984. He was a Melvin Jones Fellow and Darley Travers Fellow and District Governor of 22B in 2009-2010. In 2013 he rode on the Lion's Club Float in the Rose Bowl Parade in California.

He loved travel, music and Disney World annual trips. John was a devoted Redskins fan attending home games and he consulted during the construction of the new stadium with the Md. Governor's Committee for People with Disabilities in planning access for the handicap.

John is survived by his wife of 49 years Sandra "Jae" Johnson Atkins, his beloved son John Brooke Atkins Jr. and wife Angela of Chester, MD, one brother Clark Brooke Atkins (Maureen) of Gaithersburg, brothers-in-law Stanley A. Johnson of Salisbury and Kenneth J. Johnson of Laurel, DE., grandchildren Samantha Brooke Atkins, Noah Christopher Atkins of Virginia Beach and twins Elizabeth Rose Atkins and Joseph Brooke Atkins of Chester, MD. and many nieces and nephews. His sister Elizabeth Brooke Atkins Martin preceded him in death.

John lived his life by the Lion's motto "We Serve" and to that purpose was a Living Legacy organ donor.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 11:00 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with a visitation one hour prior to the service.
