Vetra Hurley Obituary
Salisbury-Vetra Louise Ewell Reid Hurley of Salisbury, MD died January 29, 2016 at PRMC. She was born on Elliott Island in Dorchester County, MD on October 30, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Brady Ewell & Ilah Dayton Ewell & was raised by her late grandmother Katie Dayton.
She is survived by 4 nieces, Sylvia Jean Rouse, Wilma Diane Dobercki, Cynthia Lee McQuire & Arletta Ruth Wallace of VA & WV; a nephew Michael Burton Shock of PA; 17 nieces & nephews; 12 great nieces & nephews; & 4 great-great nieces.
Vetra is also survived by her adopted family, Elbert & Dru Gladden; their children, Dean Gladden (Melanie), Denise Gladden Donalds & Sandy Gladden; and their 4 grand children & 11 great grandchildren, all of Fruitland.
Vetra lived & worked in Cambridge for many years. Places of employment included Air-Pax, Cambridge Scientific Life-O Gen, Coldwater Seafood, all of Cambridge & Shore Land Freezers in Salisbury.
She was also proceeded in by a sister Minnie Viola Ewell Shock; 2 nephews David Manvern Shock, Jr and James Brady Shock; a niece Cecila Marie Shock; former husbands Hannibal Reid & Robert Hurley of Cambridge; & also her longtime companion, Wilmer Smullen of Salisbury.
Vetra loved country music & would go to places like Opryland, TN, Sun Set Park, PA & the former Buddy Shell Gas Station in Salisbury just to list a few.
A Celebration of Her Life will be held on Friday, February 5, 2016 at 11:00 am at Delmarva Evangelistic Church in Salisbury with a visitation one hour prior to the service. Officiating will be Pastor Buzz Gregory. Interment will follow at Springhill Memory Gardens near Hebron.

Aunt Vetra it was such an honor to talk to you. The stories that you told is a gift that will last through the generations. I always admired how full of life you were. May you rest in peace. Grandma Viola spoke of you often and fondly. She truly loved her little sister. A loss in the family is like a small ripple that grows. You will be forever missed. Give Grammy a hug and kiss for me. You both will never be forgotten. Mrs. Dru and family, Aunt Jean, and all those that were so very close to this amazing lady I pray God gives you peace in this time of sorrow.
