Leonard Pritikin Obituary

Leonard Pritikin passed away peacefully in his home on July 19, 2018.

Leonard was born on May 17, 1920 in Chicago, Illinois to William and Anna Pritikin. He graduated from Crane Tech High School in 1938 and began a photo engraving apprenticeship. On February 19, 1940 he enlisted in the Marine Corps, serving in the Pacific during the war where he was injured. Leonard received an honorable medical discharge on January 10, 1945. Upon his return to Chicago, Leonard purchased a bar with winnings he'd earned from blackjack games with his Marine buddies. In 1946, he married Geneva Copeland and they had two children, Steven and Neysa. Eventually Leonard sold his bar and went back into the photo engraving business. Upon his retirement, he and Geneva moved to New Mexico, eventually ending up in Silver City. Leonard was very active in many social and service organizations, volunteering countless hours. In 2003 the Chamber of Commerce named Leonard and Geneva "Citizens of the Year". In December 2016, Leonard was awarded an honorary degree from WNMU.

Leonard is survived by his son, Steven. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years and his daughter, Neysa.

A memorial service will be held at the Fort Bayard National Cemetery August 10, 2018 at 1:00 followed by a reception at the WNMU Museum at 2:00. Numerous family and friends will miss Grant County's oldest Marine.

We meet a lot of people, both good and not so good, on our journey through life, but Leonard was one of the really good guys. Him being from Chicago and me from St Louis, we would kid a lot about the Cardinals and Cubs (although I'm not so sure he was kidding). He will leave a lasting memory on those of us that were priviliged to know him. God speed!

We moved to Las Cruces in 2007 and Leonard became a father figure, mentor, card playing buddy and introduced me to single malt scotch.

I learned more about the depression, WWII, Chicago and of course the Cubs from him than any school teacher or book.

He was the most active person in The Boulders with season tickets to most of the Aggie games, the symphony, Lions Club and Tuesday night cards.

Ruth and I missed him when he moved back to Silver City and said our good byes in May celebrating his 98th birthday in his house.

RIP Leonard and Va Ya Con Dios.

Leonard volunteered every Friday from 9-12 at WNMU Museum. I was the Museum Manager at the time and we spent time during slow periods learning about each other. He had made it a point to know as much as possible about Mimbres culture and led visitors on an informative tour of the collections. My best memories are visiting 3-4 grade schools in costume retelling living history from the perspective of the character. He, a Medal of Honor winner from Ft. Bayard and I, one of the first school teachers. I admired and loved that man.
