Alan Illig Obituary

Alan Illig

Preceded in death by his son John. Alan is survived by Elizabeth, his wife of sixty-one years.

He is survived also by his sons, daughters-in law, and grandchildren: Dr. Karl Illig, a graduate of Harvard and Juliet Illig and their children, Andrew, BA, of the University of Colorado at Boulder and Melissa, BA, of NYU (the first girl born in her father's line for five generations); Lolly Otis of Lincoln, Vermont; Professor Robert Illig, Distinguished and Tenured Professor at the University of Oregon Law School and a graduate of Williams College, and Laura Illig, BA, a graduate of Mt. Holyoke College, and their daughter, Emma Elizabeth, an undergraduate at Smith College. He is survived also by his brother- and sister-in-law and their families, Ann Roede and Lee McKnight, and preceded in death by his brother-in-law Wirt McKnight.

Alan graduated West High School in Rochester, his birthplace. He attended Rutgers University (Phi Beta Kappa) on total scholarship, following in the footsteps of his father, Rudolph, the first member of his family to attend college. Alan went next to Oxford University, which he attended as a Rhodes Scholar, earning a second Bachelors and a Masters Degree. He then served as a First Lieutenant in Air Force Intelligence, stationed at Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany, returning to the States to attend Harvard Law School, where he was a member of the Lincoln's Inn Society.

Alan was employed for forty years at the Harter, Secrest and Emery Law Firm. In 2006 he received the County Bar Association's Rodenback Award, given in recognition of his skill as a lawyer and the content of his character.

Alan was invited to join a large number of pro bono boards, in many cases serving at one time or another as President: the Visiting Nurse Service, the Rochester Area Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Lewis Street Center, the Rochester Presbyterian Home, Trustee of Third Presbyterian Church, the Chamber of Commerce, the Highlands at Pittsford, the YMCA, the Boy Scouts of America, the Al Sigl Center, the Monroe County Bar Association, the United Way of Greater Rochester, Kirkhaven, Lifespan, and the Strong Museum of Play, of which he was a Founding Trustee. He was also a twenty-three year member of the University of Rochester Medical Center board. He was also a recipient of countless one-time individual requests, to which he almost never said "no."

As to personal character, Alan was modest to the nth degree. He refused to use his middle name, Karl, or his initial, insisting on the simplicity of two names. He was interested always in speaking to others about themselves not himself. If asked where he went to school he always replied "Rutgers", never "Oxford" or "Harvard". Law school was "Massachusetts". He refused to let any one do for him what he could do for himself, carrying his own luggage, making his own repairs, stripping wallpaper and papering the interior of the family's beloved home of forty years, 44 Golfside Parkway in Brighton.

Alan was an avid reader of history, having read Modern Greats, Politics, Philosophy, and Economics at Oxford. His devotion to his three sons and his wife were the very linchpins of his life, but with his wife he never recovered from John's death. Karl and Rob and their mother so grieve at his.

Alan was a lovable and superlative human being. The community is the poorer at his passing.

Alan's Memorial Service will be held at Third Church in late June or early July. His Honorary Pallbearers will be Thomas Toole, James C. Moore, Albert Utton, Russell Olson, Peter L. Faber, Martin O'Toole, Lee Armistead McKnight, Arthur H. Roede, and Dennis Richardson.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Alan's memory to the Hillside Foundation at 1183 Monroe Avenue, Rochester 14620.

My Uncle Alan Illig was one of the most intelligent yet nicest human beings I've ever known.

He & my Dad, Donald Illig, were simply wonderful people, both cared about every person they interacted with as well as the community, the greater good, serving humanity to leave the world better because they were here.

They were both fair, just and pleasant beyond any other qualities, both believed education and had faith in the strength of the human spirit.

I always looked forward to visiting Rochester, my Grandfather, Grandmother, Uncle Alan, his beautiful wife and his 3 boys, who were his world.

I am the oldest of the 5 children of the 2 Illig brothers. After my Dad died, I reached out to Uncle Alan. I needed his gentle wisdom.

He is part of the reason I've studied law for 29 years. Although I've lived in California for 35 years, Alan Illig is a man in my life who's memory will remain in my heart. My condolences to Aunt Liz, Karl and Robert (for John as well).

I hope the few things I've accomplished in law to protect parents and children in California would make him proud.

I believe our loved ones remain with us in many ways. I'll miss him. I'll miss my Dad's voice too.

My Mom, Joy Illig died March 31, 2024, at 96 years + 1 week. I'm glad they are all together now.

Thanks to all three for the amazing examples of human decency in my life. I wouldn't be who I am but for knowing Uncle Alan & his family.

My friendship with Alan goes back to our involvement with a foreign affairs discussion group in the 60's, and his encouragement of me to lead the Lewis Street Center. I've never known a more thoughtful, modest and caring person. Like me, he has touched many with his kindness. My thoughts are with Liz and his family.

He was 100% of the reason why I joined the HSE Trusts & Estates practice as a paralegal almost 30 years ago. Just the nicest man I've ever known.

May you feel God's loving peace in your hearts.
As you sit with the sorrow of great loss, turn your pain and fears over to the one who has been sent to lift the burdens from you.
Lift your voices in thankful praise to the Wonderful Creator who has restored Alan for his life with Him in Eternity.

May this image help in your understanding that the pain you feel today is of your flesh, but the image of Alan walking beside his Lord can only bring healing and Joy to our souls.

Love others, be kind to all you meet. Let the legacy of Alan Illig continue to reach out and help those that need it most.

The Strong National Museum of Play

March 29, 2021

The team at The Strong National Museum of Play was saddened to hear of the passing of Alan Illig. Alan was an honorary member of The Strong's Board of Trustees, having served actively on the board from 1969 to 2012. Alan played a crucial role in the creation and development of the museum before it opened to the public in 1982, and he was a leader, visionary, and driver of museum growth in the decades after, including playing a large role in the museum's acquisition of the Elaine Wilson Carousel. We send our heartfelt condolences to Alan's family along with our sincere thanks for his transformative contributions to The Strong and so many other organizations and programs in our community.

I learned of the talents and the kindness of Alan when he served on the board of the SUNY Brockport Foundation. He was of great assistance and reconozed the importance of the institution to the community as it was his mother's alma mater. Condolences to all family and friends.
