David Closson Obituary
Webster - Peacefully at age 91 on November 21, 2018. Predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Joan, he is survived by his children, Judy (Vince) Cama, Carol (Gerry )Whitbourne, David (Carolyn Heit) John (Kylie); nine grandchildren; a great granddaughter; brother, Richard (Laurie); sister-in-law, Shirley Closson and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
After high school he enlisted in the Army. He then went on to graduate from Union College and received his Master's degree from Albany State College. He enjoyed a 30-year career at Brighton High School as a teacher and guidance counselor. Whether he was teaching or encouraging his students to be their best or volunteering during his well-lived retirement, he was always passionate about helping others. In 1997 he received the Visiting Nurse Service Volunteer of the Year Award for his work with Meals on Wheels.
For over 30 years, he and his wife were active members of Asbury First United Methodist Church (AFUMC), especially the close-knit Partnership Class. In his free time he enjoyed the company of his family and many close and wonderful friends and never missed a chance to share his love for them all. His family will especially miss his unique Christmas Eve "programs" gathered around the tree. Special thanks to the caring staff of Creekstone Memory Care (rph.org) and Visiting Nurse Hospice (urmhomecare.org). In lieu of flowers donations can be made to either of these organizations or The Memorial Fund of AFUMC (asburyfirst.org).
A Memorial Service will he held Wednesday, November 28th, 2 PM with a reception following at Asbury First United Methodist Church, 1050 East Avenue, Rochester. To share a memory of David or send a condolence to the family visit www.crawfordfuneralhome.com.

Dave has a beautiful and compassionate spirit. He worked as a volunteer during the AIDS epidemic. At that time I was a case manager for those suffering from the effects of HIV/AIDS and we assisted a common client. He went above and beyond to help our client and we developed a strong friendship that I will always treasure and hold in my heart. My wife and I moved to Florida 20 years ago and I lost track of Dave and Joan. This morning I got up and picked up a book that he had given me by Wayne Dyer called “Wisdom of the Ages”. It has always reminded me of Dave’s friendship as well as his compassion and wisdom. I decided to look him up on the internet and found out he had made his transition to a new life. Peace be with you my friend. You will always be a part of my spirit. Condolences to his loved ones and Peace be with you.

Mr. Closson was my high school guidance counselor and a significant presence in my life during a very difficult season. His encouragement and positive, joyful manner left a huge impression on me. My deepest condolences to his family on his passing, with my gratitude for his life of service.

I was very sorry to hear of Dave's passing. He was a special man, one who helped many a Brighton graduate down the path of success. A donation will be made to the Brighton Central Schools Retirees' Scholarship Fund in Dave's name. May he rest in peace.
