Dr. James Charles Powers

Canandaigua - April 22, 2019, at age 70, while surrounded by family. Jim, as he was lovingly known by family, friends and colleagues, lived a full and joyful life. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Bonita "Bonney" Powers; three daughters, Jennifer (Neil) Shah, Meghan and Alexandria "Lexi" Powers; two grandchildren, Isaac and Asha; brother, Robert Powers; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Beverly Kelly.

Jim was born in Pittsburgh, PA to Robert and Ruth (Bertha) Powers. Growing up, his kind demeanor earned him the nickname "Gentleman Jim". He graduated from St. Wendelin Catholic School in 1966 and went on to graduate from Penn State University in 1970 with a Bachelors of Science degree and completed his Medical Doctorate from Hershey Medical School in 1974. He met his beloved wife Bonney during his medical residency at The University of Rochester's Associate Hospital Program. Jim served his community as a physician and partner at the Canandaigua Medical Group for 31 years, caring deeply about his patients and their families, while providing love and support in their time of need. He was not only their doctor but also their friend.

Friends may call Thursday, from 4-8 pm, at Johnson-Kennedy Funeral Home, Inc., 47 N. Main St., Canandaigua. His funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, at 11 am, at St. Mary's Church, 95 N. Main St., Canandaigua. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Canandaigua. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pittsburgh Aviation Animal Rescue Team, 15 Allegheny County Airport, West Mifflin, PA 15222 or the Farm Sanctuary at Watkins Glen, P.O. I have just learned of Jim's death and will miss his friendship. We were physician colleagues for 30+ years and shared many unique and challenging patient experiences. Although I don't know his children, I am certain that they are solid citizens of our country. With parents like theirs, they just have to be! My condolences. We never did get to have that "welcome home" lunch at Warfields. I will always think of him whenever I eat there though.

My sincere condolences to Dr Jim's family. Jim was my primary care at the Canandaigua Medical Group for about 30 years, and he will always be considered the best doctor I've ever had. He was always so compassionate and willing to investigate when I had questions, many times with great humor which helped soothe my anxieties. It was an honor to have him be my doctor. Men like him are few and far between.

So very shocked and saddened about Jim's passing. I was very quiet in high school, and therefore, never really got to know him, outside of seeing that he was such a nice guy. Spoke to him at one of our high school class reunions, and he was a great listener, as I was having a hard time dealing with my husbands very lengthy illness and recent passing. It helped to ask himquestions I had, about my husbands illness, and I now see why there are so many accolades to Jim, as he struck me as a very patient and caring guy. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Bonney and his three girls, as I know how very difficult this has to be for all of you. He thought the world of his family, and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

I was truly saddened to hear of Jim's passing. I count him as one of my long term friends. We were classmates at St. Wendelin (1966) and maintained a long distance friendship since then. I will always remember his smile, that never faded, and his dry wit. His family brought him great joy and his love for them was evident.

To Jim's family,
I am sorry to hear of Jim's passing. He was such a pleasant guy to be around. I graduated with him in 1966 from St Wendelin High School and played his favorite song at our 50th reunion. Moon River.
My deepest sorrow for his family. I'm sure all his classmates will share my in my sorrow. He was always so kind and uplifting.

I was both shocked and saddened to hear of Dr. Powers passing. Just truly heartbreaking. He was my doctor for many years and was the best doctor any patient could ever ask for.

I meet Jim when he first began to practice in Canandaigua and trusted him with my health for 30 years. We used to joke about who was going to retire first and he won. I will always miss Jim's genuine caring demeanor, he was always honest and helped me make the best decisions about my health care.

My condolences to Jim's family. You were all so fortunate to have Jim sit at the head of your table for so many years.

I became a patient of Dr. Powers in my early twenties, more than 40 years ago. I was a single woman in a new town. His immediate attention to my problem won me as a patient and our shared Pittsburgh history continued it. I have missed Dr. Powers since his retirement and will think of him fondly.

Dear Family of Jim Powers - I remember him so fondly from years of working with him at Thompson Hospital and then at Maximus. He was a true friend and pleasure to work with.
