Janet Winnick Obituary

Winnick, Janet Martha (Cappon)

Irondequoit: A Rochester native, Janet died suddenly at her home, March 24, 2011, at the age of 90. Daughter of the late Elmer J. and Jean (Lambert) Cappon and predeceased by her beloved husband Robert J. Winnick and brothers Elmer (Mary) Cappon and John (Constance) Cappon. Survived by her daughter Jeanne (William) Brennan and sons Robert (Patricia) and James (Maura) Winnick; grandchildren Michael Winnick, Matthew Winnick, Jamie Winnick, Thomas Winnick, Megan Winnick, Katherine Brennan and Bryan Brennan; brother Robert (Joyce) Cappon, sisters-in-law, Constance Cappon, Mary Cappon and Annette Winnick; close cousins Charles Spiegel and Herbert Spiegel; many other cousins, nieces, nephews; and her very special girlfriends.

Janet was born on Tuesday, November 7, 1920, the first day American women were allowed to exercise their right to vote, an appropriate coincidence, considering her feisty, independent spirit. She was a tireless supporter of the democratic process and served until recently as a polling captain on election days. A devout Catholic, she was also an active member of her community at St. Salome's Church. She cherished her memories of summers spent growing up with her extended family, canoeing and swimming on Sodus Bay. An energetic believer in the benefits of physical fitness, she enjoyed her membership at the Penfield YMCA and the women's golf club at Latta Lea where she was known as a tremendous social golfer. Janet was a natural saleswoman and began a long career as an Avon representative where she received numerous awards. It was a common sight to see her on her bicycle, dispensing wisdom and delivering beauty products to friends and neighbors until she retired just before her 80th birthday. Jan was loved by everyone who knew her (as were her legendary chocolate chip cookies). She was blessed with excellent health and lived life to the fullest right up until her last day.

Friends may call Monday, 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the John M. Hedges Funeral Home 1717 Portland Avenue near Ridge Road. Janet's Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 am at St. Salome's Church at 4282 Culver Road, Irondequoit. Interment in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery to follow. Donations may be made in her memory to the American Heart Association (AmericanHeart.org).

Dear Bob and family,

I am sorry to read of your Mom's passing, she certainly was a woman to remember. My mom bought her Avon products for years, and they both had fun each time she arrived with her new book.
Mothers are special peole in our lives, I understand your sadness.

I am so sorry, Fondly, Jeanne

We will miss Janet; her direct and zesty approach to life; her sparkle but most of all our talks over the fence. So sorry for your loss.

March 28, 2011

I am the son of one of Janet dear friends and have known Janet all my life. She was always full of love, life and fun. I also remember spending a fews days at the Sodus retreat and the fun a young boy could have there.

At my mother's 90th birthday party last fall Janet was the life of the party. She talked to everyone and we had a hard time getting her to sit for a group pictures with her dear friends.

Your Mom was a great lady and she will be missed by any, but found memories will remain forever.
