Joyce McGinn Obituary

McGinn, Sr.

Joyce A. (Sr. Mary Thomasine) RSM

Irondequoit: Suddenly, Sister Joyce was called home to God on January 6, 2016 during her more than 63 years as a Sister of Mercy. Sister Joyce entered the Sisters of Mercy from St. Ambrose Parish in Irondequoit. She spent many years teaching Elementary School at St. Rita, St. Thomas the Apostle, Our Lady of Lourdes, Elmira, St. Louis in Pittsford and as Principal of St. Michael's School in Newark. She also served as the Treasurer and Counselor on the Leadership Team and Local Leader of the Rochester Sisters of Mercy.

Sister Joyce loved every part of life. She was devoted to the Sisters of Mercy, her loving family and her Irish Heritage including "The fighting Irish of Notre Dame". She was dedicated to Catholic Education and took a keen interest in her students following them through life. Sister was the family historian and possessed a special gift for recalling details in the lives of her family and friends. Sister is survived by many loving nieces, nephews and the Sisters of Mercy.

Friends are welcome Monday 3-7PM at the Mercy Center, 1437 Blossom Rd., where her Vigil Service will be held at 7PM. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday 10AM also at the Mercy Center. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Sisters of Mercy in her memory.

Sr. Joyce I am so very sad to have to say goodbye to you at this time. You played such a major role in my life, the lives of my children and husband. There has not been a day that those memories have not been part of my life. I will always remember your love and hope that someday we will meet again.

After all these years I still remember everything you attempted to instill in the students at St Micheal's. Thank you for everything you have provided me and others in life.

Rest in peace, Sister Joyce. I carry fond memories of you from my days as a student of St. Michael in the early 60s. You are admired, loved and missed.

Sr.Joyce I'm so sad that my grandchildren will never know the support and love you provided me, Jennifer and Anthony. You were their refuge and fun place to be when chaos reigned. I will always remember you and look forward to the day we meet again.

My heart is (selfishly) broken, and I am in shock, as I read about Sister Joyce this morning. She is with our Lord and Savior, and there is no greater place. I am one of Sister Joyce's very first students. She came into my life at St. Rita's 4th grade, the year St. Rita's School opened, and she never left my life. We have been in contact all these years. When I would come back to Rochester to visit, we would meet for breakfast and "catch-up" in person. We exchanged emails just last week. She was "fine". As her obituary said, she truly did care for her students, and followed a great many of us through our lives. I will miss her earthy presence and guidance, but she has reached her journey's end and is rejoicing with HIM for the rest of eternity. I send my condolences to her family, who absolutely meant so much to her. We all have been blessed to have her in our lives. I love you, Sister Joyce. Thank you for ALL you gave to me.
