Nancy Dewan Obituary
Rochester - Nancy E. Dewan, 79, of Gailhaven Court, passed away July 29, 2021, in the Episcopal Church Home, Rochester, where she had been a resident for a week.
Born in Utica on February 20, 1942, she was the daughter of Alton and Ruth Johnston Dewan. A resident Rochester since 1964, Nancy was a graduate of Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Central School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, class secretary and graduated third in her Class of 1959. While in high school, she was employed at her family's business, Dewan Dairy Bar. She then attended Monticello Junior College and graduated from Northwestern University, Class of 1964.
Prior to her retirement, Nancy was employed as a special education teacher for Rochester City School District. She was a member of many state and national educational organizations. Nancy gave much to charity and considered her family to be the most important. She demonstrated that by caring for her parents. Nancy was active in various bowling leagues, loved books and was an avid bridge player. She was very involved in elections, enjoyed target shooting with a shotgun and played softball.
Surviving are; her brother, Dr. David M. Dewan of Winston-Salem, NC, five nieces and nephews, Erin Dewan, Debbie Hesler, Jill Bean, John George IV and Neal Dewan; numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Sandra D. George on July 6, 2015.
Graveside services will be held 11AM Friday, August 6, 2021 in Crown Hill Cemetery, New Hartford, with Trish Johnson, officiating. The family will receive relative and friends at Origlio's Wagon Wheel, Oneida, following the services. Contributions may be made to a Humane Society of your choice. Nancy was the best coworker and friend. I have known her for over 30 years. She was the most giving person that I know. Nancy and I ran the Flower and Gift Fund at East High. Her generosity to help her students and staff was unconditional. I will miss her smile, kind words of wisdom and jokes. Rest In Peace my dear friend.

We will miss you, Aunt Nancy! The kids and I will cherish the many trips we did together and the fun visits in Rochester and at our home in Florida over the years. I especially loved how we would decide to explore a new place on our drives and take forever to get to our destination because of our spur of the moment change in plans! We will always remember "dessert first" and will still enjoy doing that in honor of you! I will miss our phone calls and conversation and sharing "teacher stories" with you. I will miss your beautiful gardens and especially you! We love you forever!

Nancy has always been one of the sweetest, gracious women I have been blessed to know. I am a CPA and she has been my client for many many years but more than that I consider her a dear friend. Probably my closest cousin in a large upstate family, we grew up and grew apart geographically, but certainly not emotionally. Till we meet again, rest in peace dear Nancy.

Nancy and I were good friends in high school and traveled together a couple times after we had both graduated from university. She had the best laugh! My heartfelt sympathy is with her family.
