Peter Lang Obituary

Lang, Peter

Mendon: Born February 12, 1941 in Rochester, NY, Peter passed away peacefully on April 23, 2015, joining his father, Eugene; and siblings, Barbara and Billy. Survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Kathleen (O'Connor); mother, Betty M.; and sister, Anne Marie "Queenie" (Charles) Papy. Peter will also be dearly remembered by his sons, Lt. Colonel Peter J. Lang II and Bill (Kristen); and by his daughter, Kelly (Ryan) Wise. Known lovingly by his seven grandchildren as "Grumpy", Pete will be deeply missed by his many friends and family.

Peter was a graduate of Brighton High School and Monroe Community College. He worked for the Monroe County Health Department, retiring in 1998 after 30 years, and as a bartender throughout the Rochester area. An active member of the Mendon Volunteer Fire Department for over 35 years and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, Peter was known for his willingness to help others. He was a great friend whose generous spirt, loyalty, and zest for life will not be forgotten. Peter was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, gardening, and chopping wood. He was an active member of the Hibernians and the National Wild Turkey Federation. Pete was truly one of a kind, a character that will live on in the memories of those who loved him.

Friends and family are invited to call on Wednesday, April 29th from 4:00-8:00 PM at the Merton H. Kays Funeral Home, Inc., 59 Monroe St., Honeoye Falls. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Mendon. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to School of the Holy Childhood. To light a candle in remembrance of Peter, please visit www.mertonkaysfuneralhome.com

If you are a friend of Pete Lang, you surely know that he was a loyal friend and that you were chosen for your integrity and good will, characters similar to Pete's. I was not his friend; he was a man's man. Pete softened toward me, though, during the last number of years, likely because I made such a pest of myself checking in on him after this or that surgery while Kathy was still working.
Pete tolerated me and my children as long as we didn't leave our shoes in his way or sit in His chair at the kitchen table.
Pete and I spent a lot of time outdoors together; well, not together but at the same time. I know as time goes by, and I look up from my yard work and fail to see him puttering in his yard, my heart will skip a beat with his absence.
What I learned from Pete Lang is to become my true self and live life to the fullest as he did. Pete was grateful and expressed his thanks to everyone-his family and friends-who helped him out in these last months and weeks. Pete will be missed by so many in so many places.
My continuing love to his family,
Lynn Shipe

I am truly saddened to hear of Peter's passing. He was a kind and caring soul who was always there to help those that needed help. When I worked at the Sheriff's Dept., I would often come in contact with Peter in the Mendon area. He would make many aspects of my job easier through his work with the Fire Dept. and his presence in the Community. I am truly blessed to have known him and to call him "Friend". My condolences to his family. He will surely be missed..

Peter was a great guy, I will miss golfing and talking with him. He could make you laugh on the course till it hurt. Peter was the first to welcome me to the mendon area. After a hand shake from him, it was like getting the official blessing from the Mayor. I will truly miss you, Thanks for everything.

A fellow Mendonite, I've had the good fortune to know Peter for 35 years. He was a one-in-a-million and I'll sorely miss our early morning chats at the Mendon gas station. Rest in peace.

When I moved in to Mendon 20 plus years ago, I think it was not just by chance that I moved in next door to Pete Lang. I learned a lot from him and my life wouldn't have been the same or as full if I had moved anywhere else. I learned a lot from Pete over the years. He taught me how to burn brush with a hot dog nearby to avoid a fine for not having a permit. I learned from Pete not only how to bag a buck ((he and Bill took me out on my first successful hunt)but how to hang it from a tree. And he insisted that I use his tree with his help.He helped me out of innumerable jams of tractors stuck in the creek, trees that didn't quite come down the way they should have. He drove me two miles up the creek with a kayak so that I could paddle back to our back yard during a minor flood. I learned from Pete how to collect wood, cut wood, split wood, stack wood. Yes I learned a lot from Pete Lang. I also learned about generosity and sharing. He would give you the shirt off his back and share anything he had. Well almost anything. One of the most memorable if not most important lessons he taught me was when he said, "Doc, Sharing a chainsaw is like sharing a toothbrush" Pete Lang , you will be sorely missed.
