John Glaser Obituary

John Stephen Glaser

February 15, 1938 - October 1, 2023

John Stephen Glaser, 85, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2023 surrounded by those he loved. Born on February 15, 1938 to Letha and John Glaser, Steve grew up in Tangent, Oregon. He and his loving wife, Virginia, were married for 65 years and raised a family and built a thriving farming business.

Steve attended Tangent Elementary School and graduated from Albany Union High School in 1956. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1960 with a major in Farm Crops and Business and was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He was an Eagle Scout and an active member of Rotary International for most of his life.

Steve was a true Renaissance man, and his inquisitiveness and keen intellect drove his endless pursuits. His many passions included Oregon history, photography, metalwork, computer technology, gardening, anthropology, and seeds. Most of all, seeds. He usually could be found in his shop at all hours welding or sawing on one of his many projects. He was driven to understand the intricacies of mechanisms, machinery, and digital technology. Burcham's Metals and the Apple Genius Bar have certainly lost their most loyal customer.

Steve and Virginia traveled the world to pursue their shared love of knowledge and exploration, from African safaris, sailing through the Panama Canal, to celebrating at the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Steve was an avid skier and photographer. His later years were split between Arizona and Oregon. He found beauty everywhere but could not find his car keys or phone anywhere. Those who knew and loved him will miss his vision, kindness, cleverness, and the twinkle in his eye.

Contributions can be made in his honor to the Tangent Rural Fire Protection District or to Tangent Elementary School.

I am so sorry for your loss. I also have many fond memories of working for Steve in my youth. He was a thoughtful, kind person who took the time to mentor and teach. Please accept my condolences.

I worked for Steve along with my two brothers during my high school years of 1973-1976. I have a lot of fond memories of those years. I certainly learned a lot from Steve and he was always kind and patient.

I went to work for Steve in the early Spring of 1982 and worked there until I graduated from OSU in 1987. My younger brother Rick came to work for him the next summer. Steve was gracious to put up with our many mistakes, along with John Zehr his operations manager. We learned many life lessons that we both use today from Steve.
On one summer day the grass seed harvesting crew destroyed two combine swing augers by not pulling them back in and getting too close to trees. The next day I backed one of the seed trucks into another brand-new truck causing $1500.00 in damage and told him it was okay to fire me. He would not do it, and just asked me if I was okay. He never lost his temper or yelled at us for any of our costly mistakes.
He was extremely proud of all his children (Stephanie, Melody, Gabriella, and Mitch), and he treated Rick and I like we were one of his own. On those long days he made sure that we all got dinner by bringing us hamburgers and cokes. We knew that it was just to keep out there until the moisture content was too high, or until we broke something, and John didn´t want to fix it that night. I know that even with the sixteen hours seven days a week trying to get all the seed into the cleaning barn, we look back on all of it fondly.
To the family we are hearts are with you during this time. Steve was an amazing man. He will truly be missed.
