Karen Louise Parrish

October 14, 1937 – October 15, 2021

Karen Louise (Hughes) Parrish was born in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, to Ellwood and Evelyn Hughes on October 14, 1937, the second of eight children. Karen passed away on October 15, 2021, in Albany.

Karen's early years were spent in Rice Lake and then in the San Francisco area where her family migrated during the war. The Hughes family ultimately settled in Corvallis where she attended school through high school. Karen married Preston Smith on August 6, 1955, and they lived in the Lebanon area for a number of years before moving to Crescent City, California, in 1964. While in Crescent City the couple owned and operated a retail shoe store, a Denny's Restaurant franchise, and a motel. They remained in Crescent City until Preston's death on May 25, 1974. Karen then relocated to Albany.

During her time in Albany she married Gene Parrish on August 31, 1975, and they owned and operated the Candlelight Restaurant for about 10 years. They also owned and operated a motel and a car wash. She was a member of the American Business Women's Association and served as President of the local chapter for a period. After her business ownership years she continued to work and held jobs at Westbrook's and Yaquina Bay Restaurants. Always a hard working person she worked as a caregiver to others up until she was nearly 80.

She enjoyed many trips to Maui and to Black Butte Ranch over the years and spent time with her family at the ranch. Karen enjoyed her grandchildren and also had special relationships with several of her nieces and nephews. She also made a home for several young people in need during her life. In her later years she became involved in dog rescue and fostered and adopted a number of dogs providing them a home. She was passionate about her care of her companions. She is missed by her family and those who shared in her life.

Karen is survived by her husband, Gene Parrish, of Albany; her children, Rick Smith (Judy) of Rickreall, and Lynda Hanson (Scott), of Hayden, Idaho; grandchildren, Kyle Preston Smith, of Bend, and Katlyn Louise D'Agostini (Nic); great-granddaughter, Maria Louise D'Agostini, of Rickreall; brothers, Ken, Kurtis, Kip and Keith Hughes; sisters, Kay Risen, Kitty Hubbard and Kathy Graham all of the Willamette Valley.

There will be a private interment at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens in Albany. The family is planning a celebration of life gathering to be planned at a later date.

I just found out today this precious lady passed away last month! I was blessed to know her when we hired her as one of my mama's last caregivers. Mama was the last person she cared for when she retired. She became a precious light of love in our live's who I often think of. God Bless you sweet friend. Hug "little red riding hood" for me. Love Mitt.
