I grew up with Marty in Sharon Massachusetts. We were very close friends back then. Somewhere along the way we lost contact but I never forgot about him in my memories. Me and Keith (another childhood friend of his) had always planned to show up at his doorstep and surprise him. We never got to it. Rest is peace my friend. Sorry I lost contact with you.

I was heartbroken to learn about the loss of a beloved soul, Marty Stein, and would like to extend my heartfelt sympathies to Daffodil and family, and all of the people who were touched by knowing Marty. Marty was one of the first people I met after moving to Waldport, and remained one of my very favorite people. He was so gentle, funny and kind, and a huge wealth of knowledge. Everyone loved hearing his many great stories. He will be missed by so many. (I have attached a field photo of Marty and an upbeat tribute/poem I wrote for Marty´s retirement.)

Marty had that fine balance of optimism and realism. He had that dry wit, sparkle in his eye that drew you in. He spoke proudly of his family- the love was obvious. I will miss you Marty. You made this world a better place. I see you out there pulling scotch broom and beach grass with a bottle of cider. Hold dear those happy memories.
Love,
Jane

Marty will be missed by many botanists in the Pacific Northwest! I remember relying on the Rocky Mountain Sedge Key that he co-authored back in the late 1980's(?) for photos and information to supplement Flora of the PNW. It was a lot lighter to take to the field than Flora of the PNW. I think Marty might have been the first botanist to find Wallowa needlegrass in NE Oregon, hopefully someone else will be able to expand on that. I remember Marty from USFS-BLM botany meetings and always looked forward to seeing him. He had a lot of great stories from his time in NE Oregon and in the Peace Corps. He also worked as the forest botanist on the Mt Hood National Forest, and later as a botanist for the Siuslaw National Forest in Waldport. He was also active in the Native Plant Society and led hikes for the annual State Meeting when it occurred in his area.
Marty, I hope you have found peace, you will be missed.

Marty, you were a great joy to work with. Always had a warm smile to greet us with and a way of being that put us more at ease. May you be in green fields with plenty of apples to pick... thank you for the cider and the warmth and kindness. Your being is a great example that lives on within... thank you for that.

Dear Marty's Family and Friends, please receive my condolences for your loss. I had the opportunity to work with Marty and he was one of the most kindness, very sweet, and very generous person sharing his wide botanist knowledge with everybody. Rest in Peace.
