Sondra Dickerson Obituary

Sondra Kay Grisham Dickerson

Sondra Kay Grisham Dickerson passed away peacefully at her home in Gordonville, Texas on February 3, 2018.

She was born on July 13, 1956 in Denton, Tx. to Bill and Mona (Nicholson) Grisham.

In 1959, at the age of 3, she was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. The disease struck and crippled her as a child, and then went in and out of remission for the rest of her life. However, she always kept her sense of humor. She was a precocious child and had a quick comeback as an adult.

In 1963, Sondra was named Poster Child for the National March of Dimes and flew with her parents on Braniff airlines to Los Angeles to be a part of a film about children with crippling diseases. They met the actress Jane Wyatt, and Sondra got to see Shirley Temple's dressing room.

Sondra graduated from Denton High School in 1975. She attended Cook County Jr. College after high school. She also was employed by the City of Lake Dallas as a Police Dispatcher for several years. Sondra married Robbie Dickerson on June 12, 1982. They had a daughter, Tonya Renee, who recently moved back to Gordonville to take care of her mother.

Sondra is preceded in death by her sister, Shelli Grisham Leach; her father, Bill Grisham and her step father Jimmy Owens.

Sondra is survived by her mother, Mona Owens of Denton; her daughter, Tonya and son-in-law, Sonny Smith of Gordonville, granddaughter, Lillie Renee (who called her Nini), of Gordonville, her sister, Sherry Grisham Mellgren of Denton, her brother, Randy Grisham of Denton, several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Sissy's quick wit and hearty laughter will be missed by all of her family.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 from 1-2PM at DeBerry Funeral Directors in Denton, Texas. Services will be held in the Chapel following visitation at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors with interment to follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Denton.

In loving memory of a very special lady. I had the privilege of first calling Sondra my friend while we were in junior high and have never forgotten her special smile. Hugs and prayers for her family.
