Mallory, Andrew
Andrew Mallory, MD, passed away peacefully at home in
Littleton, CO, on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at the age of 83 after a battle with Alzheimer's disease. Drew was born to Anne Elizabeth Boyd and Joseph Samuel Mallory, Jr. in Philadelphia, PA, on November 6, 1939.
He is survived by his wife, Jan, his children, Mark (Nancy), Becky (Bobby) and Julie (Matt) and seven grandchildren, Maya, Miles, Ava, Mallory, Lauren, Luke and Caroline along with his brother, Joe (Wendy).
Drew attended Amherst College ('61) where he played basketball, was a two-time All-American soccer player and served as president of the Chi Psi fraternity. He earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School ('65), then completed his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the University of Minnesota. He was selected for the Epidemiology Intelligence Service through the CDC before completing his gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Colorado. Drew worked at Denver Health for five years before joining a private practice at Rose Medical Center as a gastroenterologist. He was passionate about caring for each of his patients during his 35 years as a physician and was elected repeatedly by his peers as one of "Denver's Top Doctors." He was also singled out for numerous teaching awards by the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
Drew was known as a kind, honest man with a gentle spirit, always maintaining a deep sense of humility, in spite of his many contributions and accomplishments. He loved spending time in nature, especially hiking in Colorado with family and friends. He enjoyed birdwatching, an interest he shared from an early age with Joe, his older brother and best friend. Drew was also a voracious reader with a true thirst for knowledge; he could opine on topics ranging from string quartets to March Madness to a bold cabernet. As an accomplished athlete, he modeled a strong work ethic, competitive drive, and the importance of sportsmanship.
Drew was a devoted husband to his wife, Jan, who provided him with love, care, wisdom, and companionship throughout their 55 years together and his recent illness. He was also a dedicated father and grandfather who encouraged intellectual curiosity and treating others with respect. Drew carved out time to play sports with each of his children in the backyard and on the basketball and tennis court. He made his children feel like their games and matches were the most important part of his day. He will be greatly missed by all.
Drew's family will memorialize him in a private ceremony at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Drew's name to the
Alzheimer's Association.
