Annabel Ruth Brake Clark

Annabel Clark Obituary

Annabel Ruth Brake Clark died on Friday, March 3, 2017. She was 93. Born in Petersburg, West Virginia, she led a rich and full life. She attended Berea College in Kentucky. In 1945 she married Robert T. Clark. Together they raised four children, Doug, Lee Anna, Eloise and Christina. At the same time, Annabel earned a doctorate in theater from the University of Denver. A deeply spiritual person, Annabel was ordained as a minister in the United Church of Christ in which she served as interim pastor in five different churches, following the retirement of her husband. Thespian, pastor, feminist, peace activist and wicked ping-pong player, Annabel died courageously, making her own choice about how to live and die. Besides her four children and their spouses, Annabel is survived by her brother, Elmer Keith Brake, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be sent to Sixth Ave. UCC or Christian Living Communities. A memorial service will be held at Sixth Ave. UCC on Mon. March 6 at 10:30 am.

Miss seeing and talking with the wonderful Annabel on these crisp fall days. She would always be out walking - and stop to brighten up my day. What a treasure she was.

Annabel was a rare treasure. I worked at Clermont Park where she was a resident. In the 3 years working there, I only beat her at ping pong twice! She organized a World Religions series for the community, inviting faith leaders from various backgrounds (Muslim, Buddhist, Jewish, Catholic) and facilitating dialogue and lifelong learning. She was fun, always full of joy, always had a smile on her face. She was a change-maker. A pioneer. (Is there another woman of her generation with two Masters Degrees and a Doctorate in Theater & Theology?) She was peaceful and kind. A good friend, to all, regardless of belief or background. A peacemaker and change agent at once. I will miss her.

I met Annabel as she walked my neighborhood, which she did daily. She was going to help me get my mom (3 years her senior) connected to other seniors at the Christian Living Center after we moved my mom here from Chicago. I quickly realized that Annabel and my mom were not a match made in heaven. Annabel with her lively wit, great smile, open heart. We had so many lovely conversations -- and I even met two of her grandchildren over the 5 years I knew her. I just found this today -- I googled her because I had been traveling for a month and had not seen her recently on her daily constitutional. This is breaking my heart. I told her on several occasions that I was sure that she was my "real" mother. I am sure that I saw her not long before her passing. She never let on that she was ill. I used to stop my car to chat wherever I saw her. What grace. If there is a heaven, I'm sure she'll have an honored place. My neighborhood is an emptier place without her. I'm not a crier, but tears are streaming as I write this. My condolences to her family. You have lost a precious gem.

Such an inspirational role model; she did it her way clear to the very end. Great Lady! So happy we were able to experience you and Robert at Ridge Road UCC church in Littleton. It was such an honor sharing life space with you. So glad we got to see you on our 50th anniversary road time and, unbeknownst to us, essentially say good-bye

I want to send my condolences to the family. I came across this while searching for another. I just want to say my family were members of Berkeley Community Church and I remember how much my mother, Elaine Schweer, admired and loved Annabel. I remember her and Bob, as well. They were both such good people. I'm glad I was able to see this and send my prayers for her and your family.
