Many, many years ago the Hecht family moved into the house next door and Charlie and I became childhood friends. We spent hours running through the woods, biking around our Richmond, VA neighborhood and playing board games in Charlie's basement bedroom.

Charlie introduced me to Cat Stevens, "Tea for the Tillerman," and the Tolkien books. The Hecht family took me along on a New England vacation and years later that trip helped inspire my relocation to Maine.

My parents still live in the same Richmond, VA house and when I visit them I glance next door and remember Charlie, Margaret and their wonderful parents.

I will always remember Charlie as a young man, intelligent, full of energy, and always smiling. I am sure his boys are just like Charlie when he was young.

I am going to listen to "Tea for the Tillerman" and remember those happy days.

The entire Hecht family has always held an especially warm spot in my heart. Though the opportunity to see each other often was negatively impacted when you moved away from Virginia, I remain so very fond of you all!!! I cannot express how shocked and saddened I was to learn of your tremendous loss and know full well that your grief must be overwhelming. I remember Charlie for his infectious smile, his sense of humor, and his intelligence. It is clear from reading the previous entries in this book, that in addition to being successful and well respected in his field, he had lived a life complete with good friends and devoted family... all of whom honor his memory.I wish there were a way to ease the burden and pain of your loss. All I can say is that we must be grateful for the many good years we had with him physically on this earth, and let his spirit remain our hearts and be our constant companion in the future. Much LOVE to you all in your sorrow.

A client that I had not spoken with in awhile called me today. Years ago when he said he needed the best appellate attorney in town I sent him over to Charlie. He told me of this news just today. I have young kids too. I am sorry to hear about this tragedy. In my 22 years of law practice, Charlie, in all seriousness, was one of two attorneys I had dealings with of whom I said to myself, "man, this guy is smarter than you are Brad." God Bless his young family.

Brook, I just learned of your family's loss; please accept my deepest sympathy. I worked as Charlie's Office Manager in 1997 and never worked for a greater man. I remember when you came into his life and fulfilled it completely. I moved back to Oklahoma, but have never forgotten both of your love and affection towards me and my two children. I also remember the beautiful bundle you brought home in 1998. Although Charlie was a marked man, he was ecstatic, giddy and proud to be in love with the most beautiful and loving woman in Colorado and becoming father to the most perfect son on earth. I know that Charlie is in heaven re-arranging all of the rooms to perfection while watching his goddess on earth continue to master beauty and happiness. May God continue to grace you and your sons with blessings of love and charity. My personal life was enriched by knowing Charlie and your presence was always rewarding. Your family will always be in my prayers.

Dear Hechts-
I only learned of Charlie's passing when I opened the UVA Magazine late last night. I am deeply saddened by the news. I often thought of Charlie and hoped that I would see him again and learn about his post-law school life. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

It's February 2011 and I only just read of Charlie's passing. I'd been thinking I was overdue in dropping him a note. I shall miss him and his humor, despite not having had the chance to actually see him since we graduated from Exeter in June of 1975.

Oh, I am really sad to hear this. I was close with Charlie (and his sister Maggie) in high school at Exeter, and visited him at his family home in Virginia one summer. In 1976 he was working for the Democratic party, and got me into the convention where Jimmy Carter was nominated. It was an amazing experience. After that we lost touch for many years. I tried to reconnect with him a few years ago, and we had a brief email exchange, but that's all. I really wish I could have connected with again, and I am sad we never had a chance. I send my condolences, love and regards to Charlie's family.

I was also just reading the Exeter Bulletin and was very sad to see the news of Charlie's sudden passing. Charlie was one of my brother's and my best friends at Exeter. We played many games of 2 on 2. I can't remember who one, but we always had a wonderful time. Charlie had that strange shot that sort of rotated sideways off his hand.

My thoughts are with Charlie's family. I'm sure they miss him, just as i miss him 35 years after Exeter.

Wee too are neighbors who often talked with Charlie at the park. We enjoyed sharing business and travel sagas with him while the dogs played. We are sorry to hear that he is gone, but glad for the smiles and stories we shared.

We were so very sorry to learn of Charlie's passing today. We were "park friends" with Charlie and have been watching for him and the boys and Lila and Joey in the park for the past few months. Today we learned of his passing and wanted to reach out to let you know how sorry we are. We miss him and remember him as someone who was so dedicated to his family (2 and 4-legged alike). He always was a bright presence in the park. He will always be a part of the park and will always be in our hearts. We are so sorry for your loss and are sending you comfort and thoughts of peace. -Michelle, Michael & Buddy (the dog)

I went to high school with Charlie and will always remember him as one of the nicest guys in the class. He was smart, a little shy and I can picture him perfectly, smiling through his braces, with a big shock reddish/brown hair (70's styled). I'm so sorry that I didn't get a chance to catch up with him over the years...my deepest sympathy goes to his family. Charlie was a rare guy.

I am so very sad to learn of Charile's passing. He was an important part of my law school life and although 30 years went by, when I was in Denver with my son and his Mom, Charlie took the afternoon to spend time away from the office with me and my family. It was wonderful to spend an afternoon with Nicholas and Benjamin - terrific boys - and to share memories with them, my family and my dear friend. My heart goes out to you all.

Dear Hecht Family, Colleagues and Friends - Charlie was in my math class at PEA and was such a lovely kind boy. I always remember him smiling and laughing (and math was pretty darn early in the morning, so that was quite a feat in itself.) No wonder he grew up to be such a successful, loved man. My thoughts and prayers go out to you all in your time of sadness and loss. - Myra Donnelley, PEA '75

Many of us in Maggie's "work family" may not have known Charlie, but we know the sibling of such a beloved woman was surely special, too. She's a shining light, and our hearts and thoughts are with her and her loved ones.
