DONALD KRETSCH Obituary

10-16-30 5-20-10 Son of Howard and Minnie Kretsch, Davenport, IA. Don attended Augustana College and the University of Missouri where he earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Geology. Don met Barbara, the love of his life, while in the Army, stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco, CA. They were married 8-25-56. As a Geologist for Phillips Petroleum in OK, and TX, he finally settled down with his family in Lakewood, CO. After joining Phil Anschutz, he received the title First Exploration Geologist. Throughout his long career, Don was a genius of successful oil discovery. The Wattenberg Field in CO was among his many discoveries. After retirement in 2005, he was on the Jefferson County Draft Board, a member of the Lakewood Housing Authority, and volunteered at The Dinosaur Ridge in Morrison CO. Don and Barb also sponsored The Wild Animal Sanctuary. A man of many passions, Don had a genuine love for animals of every kind. He adored taking care of the mini-farm at his home. Extensively studying the History of the Civil War in his spare time, he was writing his own book based on his impeccable knowledge of the subject. He loved playing poker with his longtime friends from the Jaycee's, and for the last 34 years graciously co-hosting with Barb, their annual Christmas Party. With a brilliant sense of humor and captivating stories of his younger days, he always kept everyone laughing and entertained. Nothing meant more to Don than his family and friends. There wasn't anything he wouldn't do for them. No words can possibly summarize the importance of his life or the contribution of love and friendship he had bestowed on all who were blessed to have known him. Survived by his wife Barbara, brother Ferd, daughters Cynthia Bridjette and Sandra DeHerrera, grandchildren Tony, Naomi, Kevin, Keith, Phil, and Kristyn, greatgrandchildren Brett, Naveigh, Naiarah, Savina, and Ellynah. He was preceded in death by his loving daughter, Lisa Rhode and his brother Kent. Memorial service will be held at Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, 7100 W. Mississippi Ave., Lakewood, CO 80226 on Saturday, May 29, at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in Don's honor may be made to The Wild Animal Sanctuary Keenesburg, CO.
