Edward Miller Obituary

Miller, Edward
Eddie
1/17/1945 - 4/24/2021

Edward (Eddie) Hayes Miller passed away April 24, 2021 in San Carlos, Mexico. He was preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Betty Miller of Oklahoma City, OK and a sister Martha. He is survived by two daughters Marlo Miller and Andrea Miller and a grandson, Luke.

Eddie graduated from Northwest Classen High School in Oklahoma City and attended Oklahoma State University and Central Oklahoma University. He served in the Air Force Reserve.

Eddie loved any kind of racing. His racing career started at Rocket Skating Ring where he became a speed skater. At age 13, he and his father, as his mechanic, became a formidable team in competitive go kart racing. He raced both ¼ and ½ mile stock cars on the dirt in OKC. He raced SCCA Formula Fords and was national champion two times and once was the Formula Super Vee national champion. An accident resulting in a broken neck during his Rooky test at the at Indianapolis 500 eliminated him from the race. That didn't stop Eddie and he continued to race in the Formula 5000 series.

Eddie's second love was sailing. His introduction to sailing was to make an Atlantic crossing with a retired friend from Denver. He purchased a 46'Hylas monohull sloop and outfitted it for blue water sailing. He frequented the BVI, sailed across the Atlantic to Portugal, and also sailed in the Mediterranean. He loved Barcelona and spent time there living aboard his sail boat.
when he sailed back across the Atlantic he based the boat at the Bitter End Yacht Club in the BVI.

Eddie's professional life was in the building industry. He learned the trade from the ground up. He started as a framer on residential construction. He moved to Vail, Colorado in 1969 where he built apartments as Eddie Miller Construction. Moving to Denver in 1971 he continued building residential properties including Cinnamon Down the Street, a 100 unit condominium complex in SE Denver.. Both as GALE Construction, a commercial builder, and Agger Design Builders, he became a well known for commercial construction and for many elegant homes in the Cherry Creek area.

Our dear, kind, gentle and loving friend, Fast Eddie will be sorely missed.

I was saddened to hear of Eddie passing. I first met him and his wofe Annie when our family moved in next door to them in lakewood Colorado. I later babysat for their daughters Marlo and Andrea. I remember him being a kind and gentle man. He was very passionate about his racing. I vividly remember his Indy crash and his recovery. He was always so upbeat, encouraging and caring. He always took an interest in my dreams and encouraged me to follow them. Blessings to his family. RIP

Glad we reconnected. Thank you for teaching me to drive my go kart and for the ride in your 911 in a snowstorm showing me 360s. Sail on Eddie! RIP.

What an amazing man!! I can't even begin to put into words what Eddie meant to me and my family.
The things he taught me when I worked for him will always be appreciated but more importantly the friend and father figure he became will forever be in my heart.
I will love and miss him like crazy.
Keep sailing Captain Lalo!

What can I say? My heart is broken! Eddie was my brother from a different mother. He has been a major part of my life since we were 13 years old racing go karts. The adventures that we shared could fill a book.

We have been there for each other through all of the ups and downs that life has at thrown us.

I will miss you forever!!

Love you my friend, GOD SPEED to your next great adventure!

Dear Family and Friends, My condolences on the sudden loss of Eddy. I did not know Eddy well but met him years ago through mutual friends, Kent and Dagmar. Both of them and Denise always spoke so highly of Eddy. He definitely left an impression upon meeting him in Taos as he obviously cared deeply for people, and his manner was so warm and welcoming. I was hoping our paths would cross again. May your happy memories bring you peace in the days ahead.

Eddie was a friend that we will never forget. His generosity towards our daughter Denise will always be deeply appreciated. HIs patience with us as rookie motorcyclist was also greatly appreciated. We never were with Eddie that we weren't having lots of fun.

I only knew Eddie for a short week of my life, but during that time I learned how goals are to be met with wonder and enthusiasm, that all dreams are possible with the right attitude and that just because the road is dark doesnt mean that you have to drive slowly. Bye Eddie

Eddie was a caring and supportive member of the Taos, NM community and one of my dearest friends. He loved being able to give to the Taos Men’s Shelter. He was a sculptor and a poet as well as an avid reader.
We sailed the East Coast, The West Indies, The BVI and The Sea of Cortez where he was a superbly competent captain. Many of us will miss Captain Lalo. He was kind and generous. He was gentle and caring. He was my friend.

My wife Sandy and I are so upset with Eddie's passing. We were to sail with him this winter but couldn't, then had decided to stay with him in Taos right about now...

I first knew of him in 1972, when he won his first SCCA Runoffs in Formula Ford, then rooted him on for years until we finally met in 1975, me barely 15 but already a reporter. Eddie cheerfully signed my race program, then took my hat off and muffed up my hair — which I took both as a compliment and a hint to get a haircut.

I didn't. ;-)

Our friendship was immediate, and when we moved to Denver in 1980 it was eight blocks from Eddie and not by accident. I was his sign painter from then until he retired from racing in about 1991. I later thanked him for his endless mentorship in a book, Mountains of Colorado.

We both considered Eddie something of a surrogate Dad, though I called him a big brother so he'd feel younger. He loved that reference and managed to keep his humor, no matter what happened or what we spoke of.

I am building a racing memorial to Eddie now, so indeed others won't forget. Please contact me if you want to help.

Eddie always scoffed when I reminded him of his racing. Claimed nobody remembered. In reality, he could have been one of the Greats, though away from the track he'll be just that to us for the rest of our lives.

We Love You, Rapido Eduardo... #1

I’m so sorry to hear this. Eddie was indeed a very kind man. So generous! My family and I stayed on his boat in the old port in Barcelona for a month one year. The trip of a lifetime: gifted by Eddie. Always had kind, thoughtful words to offer. ❤

I've known Eddie most of my life. I used to go watch him race stock cars on Friday nights at Taft Stadium with my now husband. Was at his wedding in Vail. My oldest son, as a toddler, had his first taste of gasoline at Eddie's in Vail. Much to our horror. We laugh about it now. I remember hearing about the death of his father on the radio in Oklahoma City. Eddie was part of my life for many years.
