Beverly, Vanessa, Kyle and Trey: I knew Ernie during the best of years. I retired as a Parole Manager in 1998, so I didn't know him during the bad years, but I heard about them, and I felt sad that this fine man was going through such difficulty. When I worked with Ernie in Denver, in the early 1990's, I was always impressed, sometimes astounded, at his decency. Decency. Not a word often used appropriately in that business of dealing with society's worst actors. But he was consistently decent. In his actions, in his recommendations and in his interface with co-workers. Decent. You could count on him, check with him for the best answer to a problem. If Ernie thought it was thus and so, it was probably the right answer. Children, your father was a decent, smart and honorable man. What better is there?

Dear Bev, Vanessa, Kyle & Trey,
It is not often that we get to celebrate the life of a real hero. I am proud to have known Ernie since he hired me in 1994. His love of his family, his vocation to his profession, his caring ways and upbeat attitude have been an inspiration to me.

Ernie is one of my heros.

May God bless you all with the comfort and caring that you need in the coming days.

I have known Ernie for the past 12 years and have great respect for the man that he was and his ability to maintain a positive attitude during stressful times. I was his assigned firearms instructor to aid him in his shooting skills and I learned more from him than he did from me. He will be missed by all that knew him. God bless him and his family.

I knew Ernie for 10 years and we always kept in contact. I hated watching his struggle and not being able to fix it for him. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and know that Ernie was loved and respected by many people. I am a better person because I knew him. I will miss lunching with him and hearing all the gossip. He was just a nice, sweet man.

I met Ernie about 7 years ago when I first started with the Dept of Corrections. We shared a common interest in hot air balloons and later some of the wooden sculptures he kept around his office. It was always a pleasure to visit with Ernie. I will truly miss him. Please accept my personal condolences in this difficult time.

Ernie was more than my supervisor, he was a good friend. He was always there to offer guidance and support. I will miss sharing "wacky" parole stories with him. His humor, professionalism and management style can't be duplicated, Ernie was one of kind and will be missed. Goodbye good friend and god bless.

My prayers go out to the Fernandez family at this time of loss. Ernie was a man of honor, courage, and compassion, a more loyal person you will never find. Ernie was not only a coworker he was a personal friend. I still think back to all the great rounds of golf we shared with another lost friend, Mike Crump. Ernie was able to see the positive side to all situations and even under great stress and pressure he seemed to always have a smile and a story. The world is a better place because of him, and I am a better person for having known him. I will miss him very much.

I started working with Ernie in 1986. We hit the streets and I caught on right away that I was being tutored by a real professional. He never asked anyone to do any work that he was not willing to jump in and do himself, in a fight, he was the one to jump in before anyone else, he would always deliver on anything needed from him. The bonus was that he was hell of a nice guy.

To the Fernandez family,
To say it was an honor and pleasure to know and be supervised by Ernie somehow seems inadequate. There should be a way to say it better. I will miss the "chat" sessions he and I had. God Bless.

Fernandez family. I was lucky enough to be supervised by Ernie, and found his easy going manner, quiet confidence, and dead-pan sense of humor to be a wonderful change of pace in a job that always seems to be so "official and austere". He knew how to get his point across in such a dignified manner. I will remember him most for the laughter he envoked and encouraged with all of us. Thank you all for sharing him with so many of us here in Parole. He leaves behind such a wonderful legacy in his family, friends and co-workers.
