Chad and I shared a lot of interests. He and I played football together in high school. We even dated the same gal. I knew at the age of 13 I was going to be a Marine. He asked me about the Marine Corps and of course I was in love with the Marine Corps and told him that you would be a great Marine. From the comments I've seen, He definitely was. I just wish I knew he was in Miramar because that was my duty station and sure wish I was able to see him. Chad had the greatest soul. He always had that infectious smile and a great heart. The world lost a great person and soul the day he left. The only peace of mind I have with his passing is that knowing, Only the good die young. I sure wish he wouldn't have been good enough that God wanted him that soon. Semper fi brother. I love you.

I met Greg when I joined the 3d MAW Band in Miramar. He always acted with the best interests of his Marines in mind. He was a Marine 100% of the time. He served to be an example to those with whom he served. The impression that he has left on me is that of a professional. He was never too proud to ask for guidance. He was never afraid to speak his mind. I looked to him as a role-model. Greg's influence on my life will never be forgotten.

I grew to know him as a friend as I transitioned out of the Corps. When I was going through a particularly difficult time in my life, Greg did not pass judgement upon me; he was a true friend.

Greg lives in the lives of those with whom he served. His example as a Marine will live on within the Corps. His example as a Man will live on in the lives of all who knew him.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Greg, you are missed and you are loved.

Greg Weitzel was one of the first Marines I met when I checked into 29 Palms. He helped me get checked in on base and helped me adjust to being the "new guy" in the band. He was a good friend and a great Marine. He will be missed.

Chad was a dear friend in high school as we were band geeks together. We shared laughter, corny jokes, and a passion for music. I will always remember his huge vivacious grin, and I pity those who never had the fortune to meet him. My deepest sympathy to family and friends who have suffered this loss.

Love always,

I remember Chad being the "new kid" in my class at Tarver Elementary School. I remember with what love he played the trombone. I remember him juggling football and band and giving his all to both. I remember his excitement about joining the United States Marine Corps. I have been hearing about Chad through the "mom" phone tree since our graduation from high school and was shocked to hear the news this week.

It speaks highly of his character that even those who didn't know him closely, knew him in his kindness and sincerity.

May God comfort you in your sorrow.

Very Respectfully,

The Weitzel Family,

I've only met Chad a few times in school, so I didn't know him very well. But, what I did see in him was that he was a nice, smart and determined man. Dennis taught one or two of my classes (class of '98).

My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Sincerely,

I'll always remember Greg as the first person to befriend me once I arrived to 29 Palms. I'd have to say that he was one the nicest people I'll ever know. Regardless of what you ever needed he was there to help in anyway the he could, the world really could use more people like Greg.

Dennis was our son, Jeremy's math teacher in 1998. Although we never met Chad we are so saddened to hear about his death. Chad we're sure was the great and respected person he was due to his wonderful family. Our deepest sympathy is with you all, at this difficult time. May God bring you peace and comfort. The USA lost a great American. The USMC lost a proud Marine. And I lost one of my best friends. But now, God has gained an angel. I have to admit that I was very fortunate because I had the chance to meet Gregory Chad Weitzel. I admired, respected, and loved him. Everyone around him, that I knew felt the same way. Now he's in God's loving care. My condolences to family and friends.

Greg was one of the best Americans and proudest Marines that I have ever met. More importantly, you will never meet a nicer person or a better friend. I will never forget Greg spinning the mace in the wee hours of the morning in front of the barracks in 29 Palms after several hours of sharing beers with friends. We also had some great times in New Orleans at Mardi Gras. Whether it was marching with the Marines, traveling to fun places, or just sharing some beers among friends; Greg was always a person you would want by your side. My heart goes out to each and every one of you who had your life touched in some way by Weitzel. He was a wonderful person that the United States, the Marines, and all of us will dearly miss. Semper Fi Greg. We love you my friend!

Amy (my wife) and I have only known Greg for a short year and a half, but our lives will be touched forever. He was a great man with resounding moral fortitude and the things that I learned from him will stay with me for the rest of my life. The picture is of our second day in Iraq. Greg is 2nd for the left and I am in the middle.
To Greg's family: You have every right to be proud of the man that Greg became. Know that he touched many lives beyond the entries in this journal. Our deepest condolences and know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

It's hard to express in words what a loss this is to both the Marine Corps and to the world in general. I was stationed with Greg in 29 Palms the entire time in the 29 Palms Marine Band. I can truly say that Greg was a true friend and a guy you could always rely on. I will never forget our times in the barracks, trips to Lake Havasu, Montana, and who could forget our times at Mardi Gras.

If Death should beckon me

with outstretched hand

And whisper softly

of "an unknown land". . .

I shall not be

afraid to go,

For though the path

I do not know. . .

I take Death's hand

without a fear,

For HE who safely

brought me here. . .

Will also take me

safely back,

And though in many

things I lack. . .

HE will not let

me go alone

Into the "valley

that's unknown". . .

So I reach out

and take Death's hand

And journey

to the "Promised Land"!

Semper Fi, Marine. Carry on.

Semper Fi my brother as you will always be in my thoughts.

Greg was our platoon sergeant off and on for a couple years and I have never known another Marine to make himself available to his Marines as much as he did. If someone had gone to a party and had too much to drink, Greg would be there as fast as he could to drive them home. If I had child care needs and had run out of solutions, he always had at least 3 more options to consider. Outside of work, Greg was a fun guy, always trying to make sure people had a good time wherever we went with him. His spot here in the unit will never be filled, and there is no one else I'd rather deploy with, because Greg knew his job inside and out. I am glad to have known him for as long as I did. My condolences to his family and friends in Colorado - he will be missed!

I will forever remember my senior prom. Chad made me promise him a dance, even though the boyfriend at the time was irrate about it. I promised. As we danced, Chad gave me boy advise as we laughed and danced. As the dance ended, he gave me a friendly kiss on the forehead (he was alot taller than me!) and said that "if a boyfriend can't let two good friends share one last dance together before saying goodbye, then he's not much of a man".....and no one will ever be the man that Chad will always be!!!

Chad was a well-spoken, well-traveled, opinionated, yet humble guy. I knew that I would be his friend my whole life. I have so much respect for the way he lived his life. Although there were many times we would go for several months without communicating, we could always pick up like no time had passed. I was always happy for his successes and looked forward to one day attending his wedding and meeting his kids. I have no doubt he would have been an excellent family man. He was an extremely proud Marine and even prouder American.

He was easy to love and shared himself so well. Even though Sunday (the day I found out) was a very tough night for me, I fell asleep smiling. I have so many good memories from our time together. So many really it would be hard to retell them all. I don't have any that are negative. He's one of the best people I know. Someone I will always cherish....

I never personally met Chad, but I feel I knew him. My wife (Carrie Yeager [Murray]) was a great friend to Chad and they shared a lot of good times. Of course, I’ve heard many of them and I had wished I had the opportunity to meet him.

Now, I grieve for Chad’s family, friends and my wife because they lost a wonderful son, brother, friend and Marine.

I worked with SSgt Weitzel for 3 years, went on two deployments with him. I wanted to say that he was an outstanding leader and all around good person. He made sure that all of us Marines were taken care of before he would take care of himself. As we all do in the Marine Corps, we start to become a close-knit family within our unit. When I left the unit, he was one of the people I missed the most, so whenever I came by the shop I would look for him to just to say hi. I don't think anyone realized how big of a space he would leave that no one could ever fill; he was one of a kind. I just wanted to offer my condolences and that I am constantly praying for the family and all of my fellow Marines who've felt this great loss. He was family to us as well. God Bless, Cpl Jennifer L.
