I was sadden to hear to news regarding Joel. In the short time I had the pleasure of working with Joel in Columbus he was understanding, eager to help. We often spoke of the "weather" issues in town and joked often regarding seemingly minor incidents.

Dear Valerie, John and family, We are so sorry for your loss. To lose a brother so young and spirited is tragic. However, Joel's service was so inspirational! I believe most of his DFAS co-workers and friends left feeling better about him. We'll always remember Joel with the huge smile. He was always a gentleman and dressed in coat and tie, even on "casual Fridays".

Valerie and John, The CD with Abraham Lincoln's 2nd inaugural address, just because my daughter loves Lincoln; a smile as big as his heart; the resume that he helped me start; the encouragement when I was sad; professional research on our project given to the DFAS CIO and HQ management; Appreciation of culture and beauty; down deep, honest, real discussions on hard topics; the Relay for Life laps he walked with my little girl; the 'Joel smile' that filled the room...These are the gifts and memories your brother gave to me. It was an honor and priviledge to work and share with Joel. My thoughts and prayers are with you. May your memories comfort you during this difficut time.

I worked with your Mother and she spoke often about her ‘kids’. One day she introduced me to Joel and we developed a friendship (that I treasured.) Joel was an extremely kind-hearted man and I enjoyed seeing him at work (DFAS-Denver). His smile would light up the room! When I heard the news – my heart hurt…..and it still hurts. God Bless you and your family as you get through these difficult time. I was sad when Joel moved to Ohio, but I’m even sadder now. Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of your brother – the world has lost a wonderful man.

Valerie and John,
I was Joel's supervisor while he was here at DFAS in Columbus. It was a pleasure working with him. He was quiet and reserved but if he had a point to make he made sure you heard it. My time with him was short but enjoyable. I will miss him. May the Lord comfort you in your time of grief. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your families.
