Dean Davis
October 15, 2018
My name is Dean Davis. I am one of the many young men who was fortunate enough to encounter Mr. Counts or Keith as a teacher at Adams City High School. Except for my parents he was without a doubt the most profound individual influence in my life.
I encountered Keith as a bright yet socially inept young man of 17. He saw my potential and personally embarked on a mission to encourage my personal and professional growth. During my senior year I was planning to attend Colorado School of Mines a predominately male school where I would have furthered my academic prowess but acquired no social skills; Keith sat me down and talked me out of it. Instead he had me attend Kansas Wesleyan college. A small liberal arts school in Salina, Kansas. He also hired me to work at Adventure Bound during my Summer vacations. These activities forced me to acquire social skills and become a well-rounded person. These skills were critical to my accomplishments and delight throughout my life. While I made my living in the sciences what often set me apart were my soft skills, my caring about others, and my sense of humor which I developed during my undergrad days and weekend dinners and social activities with Keith and Mary in Craig, Colorado.
After I graduated from college. I went on to earn a Ph. D. About a year later I married my wife who I met while pursuing my Ph D. Once again Keith came thru for me. He walked my future wife down the aisle standing in for her father who had passed away. By treating her with the respect and equality I had seen Keith treat Mary we were able to celebrate 35 years of marriage recently ironically on Sep 17, 2018. The same day Keith passed away. Finally, 8 years later when my son was born, I named him Keith in acknowledgment of how much Keith had meant to my happiness and success.
Keith was my inspiration, my mentor, my role model and a great friend, I will miss him terribly. The world was more fun for having had Keith Counts pass thru it. Each of us now must share a little more joy and caring about others every day in order to compensate for his no longer sharing our world.

It doesn't seem that long ago that we were taking Physics from Keith and English from Mary in classes at Adams City High School.
Keith was a nut as a Physics instructor (as most of our teachers) and we all loved him for that. He made Physics fun.
In his obituary, Keith and Mary had a fun, full and great life together and I know that Mary and all his friends will miss him.
I am not saying goodbye to him, but "Happy Trails to you until we meet again" (Roy Rodgers).
Thanks Mr. Counts for being such a great teacher.

At Adams City High School in fall of 1963, the seniors of class of 64 and some of us underclassmen too who were involved in boy scouts doing river rafting and also in a lacrosse club recruited young Mr. Counts into forming a new Adams City Lacrosse Club, then to volunteer to be the advisor for the boy scout organization we were in - Explorer Post 102. So we got him hooked on river rafting. The rest, as they say, is history. He way exceeded all our expectations!!!
