Kenneth Petri Obituary

Petri, Kenneth M.D.
August 9, 1930 - August 3, 2023
Lieutenant Colonel, US Air Force

Dr, Kenneth Edward Petri, a longtime practicing obstetrician-gynecologist in Denver, died on August 3rd in Tucson, Arizona. Born on August 9, 1930, Ken grew up in Laramie, Wyoming, attended the University of Wyoming, and completed medical school at the University of Tennessee. Following this, he served in the US Air Force and earned the rank of lieutenant colonel before moving to Denver to enter private practice. For forty-five years, Ken delivered thousands of babies at both Swedish and Porter hospitals (some, in fact, might be reading this obituary) and, ultimately, served as the Director of Women's Medicine at Porter Hospital. After his retirement, he moved to Tucson, where he enjoyed many happy and healthy years in the desert sun. As accomplished as he was in the medical profession, however, Ken must be remembered as the true Renaissance man that he was. He read voraciously and widely, sketched and painted in watercolor, played piano most days of his life (Chopin was his favorite composer), deeply studied art history, developed a passion for wine, travelled every opportunity he could, played tennis and then golf into his 80s, and followed sports teams (especially those in Denver) religiously. He lived a full and rich life, maintaining a powerful curiosity and complexity until the end. Ken is survived by his loving children Liza Goldman, Kimberly Petri, Valorie Brown, and Kenneth Petri (Tammy Birk) as well as his grandchildren Joseph Pokriefka, Zoe Goldman, Annabel Petri, and Eva Birk-Petri. He is also survived by his former wife Carol Petri and lifelong friends, including Larry Erickson. The family will hold a private service in May and scatter his ashes on the Oregon coast that he loved so dearly.

As I reflect on his remarkable life, it's evident that he left an indelible mark on all those fortunate enough to know him. Ken's journey, spanning an incredible 93 years, was filled with vitality, passion, and an insatiable zest for life.

Though the pain of his passing weighs heavily on our hearts, I can see a celebration of this remarkable man and the profound impact he had on everyone he touched. Ken's legacy is one of boundless curiosity and vibrant living. From his career as an OB-GYN to his pursuits as a talented watercolor painter, accomplished pianist, and avid reader, Ken's multifaceted nature truly set him apart. His love for wine and sports, combined with his irreverent wit, showcased the rich tapestry of his personality.

It's awe-inspiring to think that until the last year of his life, Ken defied the constraints of age, embodying a spirit of youthfulness that many aspire to attain. His insatiable thirst for knowledge and his unwavering passion for diverse interests were a testament to his vibrant soul.
