Marshall Crouch Obituary

Crouch III, Marshall C.
01/07/1944 - 04/16/2022

Marshall C. Crouch III passed away on April 16, at the age of 78, while vacationing at his favorite place in Maui, Hawaii. Marshall had his wife and several members of his family close by with him in his final hours. Fortunately, he spent the last few months of his life visiting all of his four sons and daughters-in-law and their 12 grandchildren scattered across the country, sharing quality time with his closest family members.

Born in 1944, Marshall was raised in Park Hill, attended Regis High School, and received a professional degree in Geology and Geological Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines in 1967. He was a larger than life character known for his kindness, his booming voice, and his genuine interest in everyone.

Marshall met his wife, Jane Ellen, in 1966, sitting on a rock at a Beta Theta Pi party at the Colorado School of Mines, a love of his until the day he died. Marshall and Jane were married in October 1968, one month before Marshall joined the U.S. Army after receiving an invitation from the President of the United States. Marshall acquired friends over his life from his Regis High School years; to the Betas and everyone at Mines; to friends from the Army years in Germany; back to graduate school at Mines; and then moving to Lakewood, Colorado. After the move to Lakewood, Marshall decided to leave his job as Chief Geologist at Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas and form White Eagle Exploration. He hired Jane away from teaching because she was willing to work for "love and peanut butter" as he was fond of saying. They officed from their basement for 20 years while raising their four sons before moving to a downtown Denver office.

During his career, Marshall was involved in the discovery of several natural gas fields in Colorado and Kansas and helped to develop oil and gas fields all over the Rockies. He often took his sons out to wellsites with him. Family trips across the country were opportunities to have a captivated or captured audience, depending on the age of the boys, for reading aloud the "Roadside Geology" of various states and stops at "Points of Geological Interest."

As the boys left to start their own lives, Marshall and Jane moved back to Golden, and kept on the go, constantly working, traveling and attending professional meetings all over the country until the day he moved on from this world to the next. From his time with his geological groups, the Colorado School of Mines, being a spouse at the AAPL Landman meetings, reading Shakespeare at the Aspen Institute, and a variety of other activities, Marshall impacted people in all walks of life.

Marshall loved his family, his friends, and geology. He was known for his "interrogations" of his sons and their friends. They knew his interest in their lives was real.

Marshall is survived by his wife, Jane, his sons and their spouses, Scott (Sandi), Sean (Juliana), Steve (Cortney) and Chris (Suzanne), his sister Mari Boone (Denny), brothers Charlie and Bob, and twelve grandchildren: Maggie, Jake, Elle, Aidan, Lexi, Rose, Sam, Tobin, Izzy, Celeste, Sienna, and Jaxson.

Marshall will be honored at a Celebration of Life at Regis Jesuit High School's Blessed Rupert Mayer Chapel, 6300 S. Lewiston Way, Aurora, CO on May 28, 2022 at 11:00 am, with a reception to follow in the Regis High School Commons.

Dear Jane,

I am so sorry to read about Marshall's passing. I have thought about both of you over the years and treasure the encouragement and mentoring you offered while I worked for you both. I have wondered how all the boys have grown through the years too.
