Patricia Brock Obituary

Patricia Marcelline Scherr was born on July 1, 1933, near the tiny town of Seibert in eastern Colorado, the oldest of 4 siblings born to Joseph and Marcelline Scherr. Pat passed away on June 1, 2017. In her early years, Pat lived in a small farmhouse with no electricity or indoor plumbing. She rode a horse to a one-room schoolhouse, where her sharp intellect stood out among her 5 classmates, so the teacher allowed her to skip 2nd grade. When she was barely 13, Pat earned a scholarship to the prestigious St. Mary's Academy in Denver. Young for her grade and petite, she overcame her initial discomfort living among sophisticated country club girls and matriculated to Loretto Heights Catholic women's college, graduating magna cum laude with a B.S.N. (nursing) degree in 1954. Pat was working as a nurse when she married John Brock, a young navy veteran raised in Woodland Park and Colorado Springs, in 1955. Within 6 years the young couple were the parents of 4 daughters. They moved to Midland, Texas, where John worked as an exploration geologist for Sinclair Oil and Gas. In 1966, they had their final child, a son. The family returned to Colorado in 1967 and eventually settled near Littleton. Pat was a homemaker, a critical care nurse at Swedish hospital, a realtor during an era when very few women worked in that field, and, in the 1990's, a director at Garden Terrace Alzheimer's facility. She was an avid reader, an accomplished bridge player, as well as an excellent tennis and golf player till she was well into her 80's. She was a past president of a League of Women Voters chapter and was always engaged in the political process. In her later years Pat and John welcomed 15 grandchildren, and delighted in their growth and development. They supported and attended a multi-year stream of soccer games, volleyball matches, swim meets, baseball games, school plays, award ceremonies, graduations and weddings. Pat was always a favorite confidante and role model to both her children and grandchildren. She was especially proud of having 5 of her 15 grandchildren serving our country in uniform. Her steadying presence in our lives was a gift that was recognized and cherished, and the love that is her legacy will never die. Pat is survived by her husband of 62 years, John, by her 5 children: Karen Norris, Kim Taylor (Chip), Patricia Brock (David Daigle), Stephanie Logan (Fred), and Kurt Brock (Charlene). Also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Christopher, Sara, Katie, Brock, Marci, Emily, Libby, Leslie, Will, Logan, Carolyn, Anthony, Maria, Joseph, and Gabriel. Pat also is survived by her sisters Madeline (Jim) Mills, Eileen (David) Woods, her brother Stanley (Cindy) Scherr, and many devoted nieces, nephews, and cousins. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Denver Hospice, whose compassionate, top-notch professional care eased her way along her final journey; or to Catholic Charities. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Thomas More church, 8035 S. Quebec St. Centennial, CO, 80112, at 11:30 a.m. Friday June 16. A Celebration of Life will be held at Horan & McConaty, 5303 E County Line Rd, 80122, at 2 p.m. Saturday June 17, followed by a reception at the Brock home, from 3-5 p.m.
