Richard Spangler Obituary

On January 30, 1938, in Bryan, TX, Richard Spangler was the first-born son of Ann McGill and Harold Monroe Spangler. Dick's father, a veterinarian, was teaching animal anatomy at Texas A&M, having served in World War II with a mule train on the China-Burma Road. The family moved to Austin, TX, where his parents opened a veterinarian medical practice. Dick attended Austin Public Schools, graduating with the still close-knit Austin High class of 1955. He was a pre-med Plan II major at the University of Texas, a Phi Kappa Psi fraternity member, and a Phi Beta Kappa graduate in 1959. Upon graduating he married Linda Thompson of Port Arthur, TX, and they moved to Houston, TX, where Dick attended Baylor College of Medicine. Graduating again with honors, Alpha Omega Alpha, the couple headed to California for Dick's internship at the University of California Medical Center San Francisco and then on to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, for an internal medicine residency. It was while he was in Minnesota that he discovered skiing in Colorado which would change the course of their lives. Next, they were in Washington, D.C. for Dick's Public Health Service at Georgetown University Hospital and then to Denver for a cardiology fellowship at the University of Colorado Medical Center. After a few years in academic medicine, he joined Dr. J. Thomas Okin in the private practice of cardiology. Together they initiated a number of innovative cardiac testing programs, including an MRI program at St. Anthony's Hospital. The two men retired at the turn of the century, but remained involved in MRI and Gamma Knife procedures. Following a lengthy illness, Dick's loving heart failed on August 22, 2014 in Denver, Colorado. Dick was a sometimes larger than life figure, with a rapier wit, a wonderful sense of humor, and an enormous heart. He held nothing dearer than home and hearth except for family. He is survived by his loving wife Linda, his beloved son Christopher Dalton Spangler, and his two sweetest grandchildren on earth, Madison Elizabeth Spangler and John Dalton Spangler. He leaves his brothers Samuel Carter Spangler, Scott Monroe Spangler, Stephen Brown Spangler and his sister Anne Spangler Perrier. He is also survived by his much loved sister-in-law Nancy Smith of Amarillo, nieces and nephews, cousins, great nieces and nephews and many dear friends and colleagues. If you were lucky enough to have spent any time with Dick, cherish it. There aren't many more like him. Burial rites will be held in St. Martin's Chapel at St. John's Episcopal Cathedral,1313 Clarkson St, Denver at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, August 26, followed by inurnment on All Soul's Walk. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations which will give young people an opportunity to excel in life through the Opportunity Plan, Inc., 504 24th St, P.O. Box 1035, Canyon, TX 79015, or a favorite charity or scholarship program.

I had the great pleasure of working with Dick Spangler. He was the medical director of the cardiology service line at St. Anthony's Hospital and I was the RN manager of the same. After that work, I transcribed the medical reports for he and Dr. Okin's growing practice. Through that working relationship, we became friends. A great man, full of love, wit and humor. Always a pleasure to go to work everyday and spend time with him solving problems, listening to his stories, and just generally being in his presence. A robust, larger than life figure, he has left many fond memories.

Dick was my big brother, my friend, and one of the Greatest Human Being I have ever known. I was fortunate enough to spend time with him from 2008 through 2011. We would have lunch together at least once a week where we discussed topics from politics to local and world events. He had a way of telling stories that would literally have you in stitches from laughing so much. There is not a day that goes by that I don't feel his presence or think about his life and how it affected everyone he touch. I will always be eternally grateful to have had Dick Spangler as my brother.

Dear Linda, Chris and family,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It saddens me to lose another family member. I only had the pleasure of meeting Dick once when he was in his teens here in Austin. For over ten years I've been gathering bits and pieces of the Moses Family Bible and just completed it this month. I am trying to send each family a copy of it and I was hoping to send this to him to read. I think he would have enjoyed it as much as Sam has. But now, I am going to send it to you to keep and pass on to your family. Please contact me with an address that I can send this to you. Sam isn't sure of which address is current to give to me. You can text or call me with an address at 512-773-0222.
Again, I am so sorry. Much love to you all, and may your memories help you through this difficult time.

I just learned today of Dick's passing. Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the service due to a long-standing business commitment. I represented Dick and Tom Okin in some legal matters and always found Dick to be such a delightful man to spend time with. His keen wit and Texas accent made me always look forward to our meetings. My former legal partner, Roger Johnson, said that Dick was one of the best expert witnesses he had ever seen. Please accept my sincerest condolences.

Goodbye to a dear friend of more than 60 years. Dick was always the smartest and funniest of us all. Courage saw him through to the end. He will be missed by many who will keep his memory fresh as we tell and re-tell tales about him.
