Steve Groer Obituary

72, a Pulitzer Prize winning photographer at the Rocky Mountain News, died Sept. 26 of heart disease. Born in Washington, DC, he was a 1966 Maryland University graduate. While in the Army shooting news and features for European Stars & Strips he won the 1970 National Press Photographers Association's Military Photographer of the Year award. After 4 years at the Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester NY, he spent 21 years on the Rocky photo staff, sharing the 2000 Pulitzer for breaking news photography for the Columbine High School shooting. He then ran a thriving freelance photo business. He is survived by Patty Mack Groer of Aurora, his beloved wife of 38 years, and sister Annie Groer, a Washington DC journalist. We'll celebrate his life Oct. 5, 11 am to 1 pm at the Hudson Gardens Garden Canopy, 6115 S. Santa Fe Drive, Littleton, CO. 80120. Donations in his name can be made to Hudson Gardens. My sincere condolences to his beloved wife, Patty. While I never had the pleasure of meeting her husband, I loved hearing her speak so highly and so lovingly about her soulmate. May she be comforted with the beautiful memories they created together over nearly 40 years of marriage.
