What could I say about Tom? It would take pages and pages.
Tom was our neighbor in Denver in the late 50s. Son Thom III was my age, late daughter Linda a bit older, and Larry a year older than my younger brother.
But we had such wonderful times, either at their house or ours.
Tom was quite a cook. He would make pancakes with bananas, and throw in the banana peal!
I moved back to Denver in the 80s and got reacquainted with him.
Tom was always the marine. He would often "chew me out" in his military fashion--why are you doing this, why aren't you making something of your life?
And you know--he was always right.
But in the process I learned something about Tom and other military personal.
I had teachers and coaches over the years who brought their military attitude back into the world. At first I thought they were just being crude and cruel.
But I came to see it differently.
Tom had a deep affection for me. But he knew--hey, life's gonna be tough. You didn't go to war like I did, but I'm gonna give you some tough lessons you need to know.
And that's what he did.
I think of Tom almost everyday. He was on the short list of the finest people I've known in my life.
May his memory continue to be an inspiration to the family and those who knew him.
