Tim McGovern Obituary

McGovern, Tim
October 22, 1947 - December 24, 2020

Tim McGovern, a long-time Denver journalist-turned-entrepreneur, died on December 24th.
A third generation Denver native born to Elinor and Ray McGovern, long deceased, McGovern attended Regis and South High Schools and earned an English degree from Colorado College.
After serving as a U.S. Army combat correspondent in the Vietnam War where he earned six decorations, he embarked upon a newspaper career that took him to Ohio, Connecticut, New York, Nebraska, and finally back to his hometown, where he served from 1976-1980 as a city hall reporter for The Denver Post. In 1980, he began covering the Colorado Legislature and the governor's office for the late, lamented Rocky Mountain News. Next, he became managing editor of the Durango Herald in Durango, CO, where his newspaper won dozens of state and national awards, including the Colorado Press Association's Sweepstakes Award in 1982.
He returned to Denver, became editor of Denver Magazine, Denver Business Magazine and, later, editor-in-chief of the suburban Sentinel Newspapers.
After being downsized out of a job, he worked briefly as a freelance writer and taught writing and journalism at Metro State College, CU-Boulder and the University of Denver. In 1990, he founded a company, Power Points, Inc. which for the next 30 years ran football and basketball contest promotions for newspapers around the country-contests which awarded millions of dollars in prize money to newspaper readers.
He was twice a loving husband, and for the last several years adored his girlfriend, Deborah Uroda of Durango.
Survivors include his son Matthew (Katie), and his siblings Grady, Mollie (John), Kathy (Ben), and Marty.
The funeral Mass and Celebration of Life is 1pm on Wednesday, January 6th at Annunciation Catholic Church, 3601 Humboldt St., 80205. It can be streamed live at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Denver Facebook page, and viewed later at that site as well.

Tim was a great editor and spirit, be it in the Herald newsroom or at a Denver magazine office. And such a big smile. He was great to work for and always valued your contributions. It's been a long time since I worked with him, but the memories remain clear and sharp of a lot of good times and journalistic accomplishments. Such a good man. RIP, Tim.

Life hasn't been the same without you, ever since I knew about your football and basketball contests, I was to do them every time. It was a privilege being acquainted with you, and doing your sports contests, you were a great guy, and I'm sure people adored you.
