Anthony Bowman Obituary

Anthony Will Bowman
"Tony"
Anthony Will Bowman (Tony) passed away on August 28, 2015 at the age of 77. He died at home peacefully surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren. He bravely fought medical challenges related to Alpha1 Antitrypsin Deficiency for the past 33 years. Tony chose a life of happiness and positivity. His courage, strength, and humor made a great impact on others and will be greatly missed.
Tony was born in Salt Lake City to Will Wattis Bowman and Hazel Mills Bowman on May 4th, 1938. He attended East High School. He served an LDS mission in Uruguay and Peru, where he established the first Boy Scout Troop in Lima. Tony enjoyed his time working as a Ski Patrolman at Alta. The fresh air, mountains, wildlife and the history of Alta were imprinted on his heart, and he carried this love throughout his life. He was passionate about history and the great outdoors. He climbed several of the highest peaks throughout North and South America. He never missed an opportunity to partake in an outdoor adventure in every part of the world he visited.
He attended Utah State University and in 1967 earned a Master's Degree in History, completing a thesis entitled "From Silver to Skis: A History of Alta, Utah and Little Cottonwood Canyon 1847-1966."
He worked for USAID in La Paz, Bolivia and traveled the country acquiring information about its history. He was the Assistant Director of International Programs at USU, where he also served as the Program Director for the Peace Corps volunteers assigned to Bolivia. His career focus shifted to the preservation and archiving of data and information, where he worked to develop electronic libraries throughout South America, the Caribbean, and Europe.
In 1970 Tony married Martha Orías in Logan, Utah after meeting at USU. They had four children: William Bowman (Heidi), Cecilia Parkinson (Chad), Candice Gonzalez (Francisco), and Jennifer Jensen (Erick) and 12 grandchildren. Tony's life revolved around his family. He was always eager to start the next family adventure. After living in Utah, Colorado, California, and Michigan, they traveled the globe before returning to Utah in 2006.
The family will receive visitors on Thursday, September 3, 2015 from 6-8 pm at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple in Salt Lake City. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, September 4, 2015 at 12 pm at the LDS meetinghouse located at 498 East 14085 South in Draper, Utah. Visitors are welcome prior to the funeral from 10:30-11:30 am. Internment will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. A gathering will be held at the above-mentioned LDS meetinghouse following internment.
His family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his name to the LDS Church Perpetual Education Fund.

Dearest Bowman Family,

Mike and I are so sorry to learn about the passing of your dear husband and father. We have some very sweet memories of Tony and your family from when you lived in Michigan. Your dad was such a steady influence in our young lives at that time and a wonderful example of an honorable man. He was a great example to our young family. We cannot drive past your home on Bluett and not think of all of you - we miss you. You have touched out lives in unimaginable ways. We love you.

Martha and family,

Tony was a source of strength in the mission and such a dear friend and roommate at USU. We played guitars and sang, studied, chased girls, skied, and worked together. We drifted too far apart as the years passed, but I have many happy memories.

May the Lord bless and sustain you at this difficult time.
