Arthur Sheldon Obituary

1935 ~ 2015
Our beloved Arthur William (Bill) Sheldon Jr; husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away suddenly, Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at his home in Hurricane UT. Bill passed due to declining health and complications from heart and lung problems.
Bill was born to Arthur William and Evelyn Mae Williams Sheldon on September 1, 1935 in Salt Lake City UT, the second of four children. In early childhood, from the day school ended until it commenced again in the fall, Bill loved living in the family summer home in Emigration Canyon and exploring the beautiful surroundings there.
Bill attended West High and joined the Navy. His incomparable work ethic began at age 14 at Salt Lake Hardware and stuck with him until the day he died. By working alongside his grandfather, and at a wide variety of jobs, he learned a little about everything and could fix virtually anything. He was a long-time employee at Collier-Heinz and at the time of his retirement had devoted 15 years as superintendent of properties at Deseret Mutual.
Bill worked hard and played hard, too. He excelled at baseball, softball, bowling, racquetball, and golf. He loved music, motorcycles, boating, cars, dogs, and people. He was a friend to all, and never hesitated to share his time, knowledge, skills, and expertise with anyone in need.
On May 30, 1982 he and his sweetheart Marilyn were wed, and on September 8, 1999 they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and brothers, Delbert and Robert Sheldon, and stepson Ronald D. Hart. He is survived by his dear wife Marilyn, sister Beverly Despain, and children Dorothy Tucker, Twin Falls ID, Steven Sheldon, Kearns, UT, Ken Sheldon, West Jordan UT, Robyn Lindsey, Bountiful UT, Art (Vickie) Sheldon, Bountiful UT, and step-children Gerilyn Hart, Salt Lake UT, Robert J. Hart, Salt Lake UT, and Barbara (Pat) Lenhart, South Jordan UT, 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, and his beloved dog Boots.
Family and friends may call at Russon Brothers Mortuary (255 S 200 E, Salt Lake City UT) Tuesday, February 24 from 6-8pm, and prior to funeral services Wednesday February 25 from 9:45-10:45 at the LDS Meadowlark Bldg (2180 E 9000 S Meadowlark Way). Funeral services begin at 11:00am. Interment will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Online guestbook at www.russonmortuary.com

Bill, from our days at the old Salt Lake Hardware you drifted in and out of my awareness along with your brother, Del. I didn't always agree with you when you acted big brother to me, but I knew you cared for all of us. I know the memories we all have of you will make the sorrow of having you gone easier as time goes on. You will be missed. I also am certain that you three boys are picking out the fastest bikes Heaven has to offer to go cruising on. Enjoy the ride! May Heaven's angels hold your loved ones in their arms to comfort and support them in this time of sorrow. God bless.

I will miss you my friend and enjoyed visiting with you in your drive way. I was happy to know you and I was really happy to finally get little booters approval, when he stopped barking and growling at me, and let me pet him. God Bless

Going to miss you terribly Bill. I will treasure all of the driveway chats and drop-bys, which I am sure that a lot of people can relate to. I am going to miss your attempts at trying to sound like a harsh lecture when you know I am not going to listen and you just end up laughing and rolling you eyes. I am going to miss listening to Marilyn being your voice of reason and telling you to knock it off and then you snickering about it. I will treasure the times that we spent, even if it was taking you to the doctor, going to dinner, or to get ice cream or just helping you guys with your yard. You are truly a special spirit and a friend to everyone. Always willing to lend a hand, even when you weren't feeling good. Love you Bill!

Bill was a great neighbor to all of us first-time homeowners on Cherbough Circle in the 80s. Not only would he give solid advice on how to complete some house or yard project, he'd usually help finish it and not expect a thing in return. Painting the exterior of my house, I wanted no part of leaning belly-down over the edge of a roofline to hand-brush the fascia which could not be reached by a ladder. Bill came home from work and, dressed in one of his favorite white golf shirts, got up on the roof and finished the job like it was nuthin'. His bark was worse than his bite, as evidenced by his booming voice that kept the kids off his lawn, yet bought 'em all ice cream when the truck came down the street. The end of an era.

I'll miss the call from Bill at the end of the first half asking me what is wrong with the Jazz team, and the same call during the Utes game telling me the team looks good today. I'll miss my drive home from work phone conversation about my day or his and updating him about our mutual friends and how the family is doing. He was always interested in others and never failed to offer his help for what ever I had going on. I'll miss my front office girl telling me that my brother is on the line and wondered if I had a minute to talk, I knew it was Bill and always tried to brake away to talk to him. I'll miss that voice, that smile and that firm hand on my shoulder when I didn't even know he was coming over to see me. I'll miss my best friend and all we did together over the years and look forward to seeing him again.

His Brother, Michael Van Leeuwen,

Uncle Bill you will be greatly missed but never forgotten by any of your friends or family. You were such a bright light and there is much sadness but we will celebrate your life with the memories that we all hold dear. Be at peace now. We love and miss you!
