Brenda Van Otten Obituary

Brenda Van Otten
1950 ~ 2012
Brenda Lee Eddy Bascom Van Otten, our beloved wife, mother, sister, and grandmother, passed away peacefully at home on June 5, 2012 after an eight month battle with brain cancer. She will be remembered for the kindness, love, laughter, and service she gave to so many.
She was born October 24, 1950 in San Diego, California, the second daughter of Merritt Volney and Maxine Dudgeon Eddy. She married her eternal companion, Ronald Van Otten in 1988.
Throughout her life Brenda cherished her friendships and local communities. At 22 years old, Brenda was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and committed her life to following her beliefs. She enjoyed researching genealogy, participating in humanitarian aid projects, teaching others how to use and maintain food storage, and giving time to her church.
She found her greatest joy in her family. Brenda is survived by her husband, Ronald; her children: Steffinie (Andy), Lindsay (Jeff), Kelly (Eddie), Leilani (Rob), Erik, Bettilee (Aaron), and Phillip; step-children: Ron (Jenn), Josh (Robynn), Jessica (Travis), and Crystal (Dan); 16 grandchildren; sister, Sandy (Dick), half-brother Ray, and many loving members of her extended family.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 9, 2012, at 11:00 am at the LDS Crescent Ridge Stake Center, 1245 East 11000 South, Sandy. A viewing will be held at the church Friday 6:30-8:30 p.m. and Saturday 9:30-10:45 a.m. Interment at Larkin Sunset Gardens Cemetery. To Ron and the family,

Again, our condolences to you with the passing of Brenda. I remember her as one of the service-oriented and cheerful people I have ever known. Please know that life is eternal, that death does not terminate our existence, that the greatest joys of a married and family relationship can be carried on beyond the grave.

May our Heavenly Father bless you.

Several years ago our stake did a "Back to Egypt" project to help us get our emergecy food storage etc. ready. At the planning meeting we were having trouble coming up with a date that all could agree on. Brenda forcefully said, "The Church has been telling us for 40 years to get our food storage!" After she mildly chastised us, we agreed on a date and moved forward with the assignment. It was a great success, and she was a big part of that! She felt very strongly that we should follow our leaders and do what we are asked to do!

I am so blessed to call Brenda a friend. I have learned so much from her as we have gone visiting teaching together the past couple of years. She has taught me much about faith and love and service and trusting in the Lord. Thank you, Brenda. Adieu! We will meet again!
