Carol Embree Pendell passed away quietly at her home in Salt Lake City May 28th, at the age of 94. She was born Carol Maybelle Embree in Pasadena, California, on Jan. 20, 1921, and married the Reverend Thomas Roy Pendell, a Methodist minister, in 1943. Carol led an active life as a minister's wife, a mother, a peace worker, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother.
In the 1970s Carol served as International President of WILPF, the Women's International League for Peace & Freedom, and travelled frequently abroad in that capacity. She was nominated for the office of Secretary of Peace in an article for Redbook magazine "44 Women who could save America". In the 1980's Carol participated in meetings of the International Committee for Security in Europe, at the highest levels of the United Nations N.G.O., and was co-creator of the U. S.-Soviet Citizen's Conference.
Both Carol and her husband Tom were native Californians, and spent most of their lives there at seven Southern California parishes. Carol moved to Salt Lake City in 2007, not long after the death of her husband in 2003 in Sitka, Alaska.
She is survived by her brother, Weston Embree, of Pasadena, California, her three sons, David Pendell, of Salt Lake City, Dale Pendell, of Penn Valley, California, and Howard Pendell, of Sitka, Alaska, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
A short memorial will be held Sunday, June 7 immediately following the 11:00 service at Centenary United Methodist Church, 1714 S. 500 East.
