Carol Stringfellow Obituary

Carol Hollis Stringfellow
1941 - 2014
Carol Hollis Stringfellow, our sweet mother, passed away on November 5, 2014. Carol was born on June 2, 1941, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Elby and Marie Hollis. She graduated from East High School and thereafter married her love, Burton R Stringfellow in the Salt Lake Temple. They met at a lunch counter while ordering dessert, soda cracker pie.
While mom had many talents and accomplishments her greatest attribute was in showing kindness and love to all. This charity for others defined all relationships she enjoyed throughout her life. As such, she will be greatly missed, and her example and love will never be forgotten.
Mom, thank you for all you have done for us, we love you! May you dance among the stars with dad. You two are the best.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Tom, and husband, Burton. She is survived by her sister, Connie, children: Cory (Jen), Xantha (Dave), and Justin (April); ten grandchildren: Madi, Isaiah, Brooklyn, Caroline, Eliza, Zeke, Luke, and Sicily Stringfellow, and Jefferson and Brody Furlong; Natalia and Audrey Simpson; and best friend Pat.
A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, November 8th, 2014 at the LDS chapel located at 668 Second Ave., SLC, UT with a viewing 1 hour prior and on Friday, November 7th from 6-8 PM at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, SLC, UT. For condolences, please visit www.larkincares.com

Although I have lots of fond memories of spending time with our Stringfellow cousins as kids including camping out in the backyard in a tent, playing Atari games, amusement park rides, etc., I got to know Aunt Carol well when I attended BYU back in the 90's before and after a mission to Brazil. She was always very inviting to stay with her family over weekends and holidays especially Thanksgiving. The whole family enjoyed many meals together including Grandpa Elby and Uncle Tom. She made a room so comfortable that I slept late on Saturday mornings and I fondly recalling her say, "You really know how to sleep in!" when we were trying to make breakfast at Dee's. I know she was kidding me, but it always made me laugh. She was real supportive of everything I did at school at BYU and the mission as her son served around the same time and she wrote me several times. I know that she will be remembered for loving her family and serving them the best way she knew how. I will miss Aunt Carol very much. Condolences to her other family and friends at this time. I have included a picture from my last visit with Carol and Burt at Justin and April's home in Syracuse for a cookout in August 2007. Fond Memories of Carol and Burt and their love for one another will live on.

My relationship with my dear sister-in-law goes back 55 years when I spotted a girl in the halls of East High School with the same charm, beauty (Oh those delicious lips) and grace as the girl who was stirring my secret passions while I sat next her in Biology class, her sister Connie. Over the years she has been nothing but kind and supportive. So easily tickled and easy to please by simple gestures or the rare indulgence, none more exciting than her first car, that stunning Falcon convertible. Always the energy behind family get-togethers, she took care to make sure that every and each of the folk received personal attention, hearing, and a full plate. She yearned only for more closeness among the family. Her choice in mate was impeccable. I especially enjoyed long conversations with Burt about the "big issues in life" from Mormon and Civil War history to astronomy (which Carol enhanced by sending me the Hansen Planetarium calendar every Christmas).
That this delightful spirit has flown away after what seemed only an instant, leaves an eternal emptiness in my life. I only hope you knew how much you were cherished.

Carol is my cousin. Most of our young lives were spent together. Nearly every Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter and Forth of July we saw each other. The barbecues, fireworks, huge family dinners are things I will always remember. Our mothers quite often dressed all five of the daughters alike. Carol was always sweet and kind to all of us! I will never forget her.

Believe it or not, I also remember that first visit. And I remember how happy Aunt Carol and Uncle Burt were. He had waited years to meet the right woman, and Aunt Carol was that person. They complimented each other, and you could tell how much she was adored. And not just by Uncle Burt, but by the whole family. She fit right in! She was sweet, elegant, and the epitome of kindness. She was real. I love you Aunt Carol. You will be missed. I enjoyed our phone conversations-especially after Aunt ElNora passed away. I hope you felt as I did, that we filled a void for each other. I will truly miss you.

I remember the first time I met Aunt Carol - the many times Uncle Burt would come and get Stan, Susie, Warren and myself and take us to the movies or swimming - then one day there was a beautiful lady sitting in the front seat of the car!!! We didn't see Uncle Burt as much after that, but we didn't mind sharing him, and have always loved Aunt Carol so much. I'm happy they are together again.
Love you all - Rachel
