Cora Elggren

1927 ~ 2021

Riverton, UT —Cora Sieverts (Neerings) (Hathaway) Elggren, 94, passed away October 12, 2021 of natural causes. Cora was born April 28, 1927 to Peter and Nelly Sieverts Neerings who were Dutch immigrants. She was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, graduating from Granite High School. Cora's first job was a secretary at Utah Woolen Mills. She met Leonard Hathaway on a double date at the Rainbow Rendezvous where they decided they liked one another more than their dates. They were married in the Salt Lake City Temple following WWII. Cora and Leonard raised their 4 children in South Salt Lake. They were foster parents in the Indian Placement Program to include 7 foster children. After Leonard passed, Cora served a full time mission in Nashville, Tennessee. She remarried Allen Elggren and gained his adult children and many more grandchildren. Cora lost Allen four years later, losing two husbands to cancer. She served in many callings for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a total of four temple missions in the Jordan River Temple and Washington, D.C. Temple.

Cora lived a life filled with service and was always baking something to share with others. She was fortunate to be able to travel extensively and made friends wherever she went. In her last years, she lived for visits, "milk nickels," and phone calls lasting less than 20 seconds. Cora was loved dearly and will be missed by her family and friends.

Cora is survived by her children Rebecca (Creighton) West, Heather (Mark) Dodge, Janice (Mrs Bruce) Hathaway, Allen (Linda) Elggren, Wayne (Deanna) Elggren, Ken Elggren, Steve (Debbie) Elggren, and Norinne (John) Boyle, Craig (Cheryl) Elggren, foster children Russell Begay, Yolanda Neil, 41 grandchildren, and a plethora of great grandchildren.

Cora is preceded in death by her parents, siblings Theodore, Abraham, and Grant Neerings, Catherine (Welchman), husbands Leonard Hathaway, Allen Elggren, children Bruce and Michael Hathaway, foster children Ben, Thomas, & Helen Watahomigie, Greg Kaye, Juanita Brown, grandchildren April Dodge, Scott Hathway, Ken and Don Elggren, great grandchildren Ryker Bell and Rose Malherbe.

There will be a viewing at Larkin Mortuary in Riverton (3688 W 12600 S) on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 from 6-8pm. Interment will be Thursday, October 21, 2021, 12pm, at Larkin Sunset Gardens (1950 E 10600 S Sandy, UT).

I am so sorry for your loss. I have been friends with Cora since she worked at Utah Farm Bureau. My heart is so sad to learn of her passing. She was a great example to me. I have many fond memories of her. She was one of the kindest, Christ-like person I have ever known. Cora will be missed but I know there were many people to greet her as she arrived in heaven.

Dear Noni & John Boyle, I have often thought of you over the years and hoped you were well. I have wonderful memories of your young family as we lived in the Cottonwood 3rd Ward. My love and best wishes to you and family at the loss of your mother. Phyllis has been gone over 20 yrs and at least once a month I have something to ask her or want to share with her. Best to you, Tina Riches

Cora shared so many times her empathy nurtured out of her experience with Linda and I in our need. She listened without judging and encouraged without pushing. We look forward to the future reunions lasting longer than our visits and phone calls.
