Daniel Hunter Obituary

Daniel J. Hunter

1939 – 2023

- On April 29, 2023, the first warm summerlike evening of the year in Murray Utah, Daniel J. Hunter, our beloved Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Uncle, Brother and Friend, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, after a brief illness.

Born September 29, 1939 in Burley, ID to Daniel Jackson Hunter and Bertha Fern Hill, he is the 3rd of 4 children and was raised with them on a farm in Rupert, Idaho. There he made the friendships of his youth and attended school, graduating from Minico High School in 1957. He also attended the University of Idaho and later completed his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Phoenix.

He married Diane Southall in June of 1961 in Elko, NV (later divorced) and they had 2 children, Todd (Leesa) and Dana Lawrence (Richard).

As the youngest son of a farmer, Dan learned to work. He used his work ethic to pursue his independence and forged a character of caring for others. There were very few charities that he did not give to, and very few needs of others that he didn't try to meet. He leaves a legacy and example of loving God and his neighbor with all his heart.

Dan moved to Salt Lake City in the fall of 1961 to work for Sperry Utah, and later in 1966 he found his place working for a startup company called Kenway. Dan held many positions at Kenway (later Eaton-Kenway) and made many lifelong friends.

Dan traveled a great deal both for pleasure as well as business. Some of his favorite travel memories were visiting his sister Linda and deep sea fishing with his Dad in Hawaii, the Indy 500 and a business trip to Brazil.

Dan's passion was his family and he is loved by his children, 7 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren with one on the way! Always handy with a Werther's hard candy, or a pack of sugar free gum, the grandchildren quickly learned to check all his pockets.

Dan was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings in the Murray Utah North Stake and Wards as well as for many years as an ordinance worker in the Jordan River Temple. He also served as a volunteer guide for many years at the Church's Conference Center in Salt Lake City. His was a life of service for the betterment of his fellow man and family. He rarely thought of his own needs.

Dan was also a gifted artist and he completed portraits and artwork for many of those he loved.

Dan is survived by his 2 children, 7 grandchildren: Sarah Gayheart (Cory), Mandy Lemmon, Daniel Addison Hunter (Lacey), Spencer Hunter (Whitney), Abby Hunter, Kara Lawrence, and Merrill McKay Hunter. Along with 14 great grandchildren: Stockton, Hunter, Eliza, Beckett, Haven, Ivy, Dawson, Molly, Jonah, Samson, Hunter, Lorik, Monson and Kaleah. Also survived by his brother Terry (Toni) and sister Linda Osborne (Ken Deceased). Preceded in death by his parents and sister Willa (aka "Billie") Porter.

Funeral services will be held at the Jenkins-Soffe South Jordan Funeral Chapel, 1007 West South Jordan Parkway, South Jordan, UT at 11:00 on Friday, May 5, 2023. There will be a visitation on Thursday May 4th from 6–8 pm, and May 5th from 10:00-10:45 am prior to the services. Interment at the South Jordan City Cemetery. Dan for many years would greet me calling me, Bishop. We were not in the same ward but I told him; Dan if that ever happens I´ll find a way to have you in the Bishopric.
Years later I was called as Bishop and the Lord helped me in keeping my promise to him by having our wards combined.
Dan as a faithful ward clerk. And...a wonderful friend.

I was a former neighbor of Dan's some years ago. He had to be one of the most genuine and kind people I have ever had the blessing of knowing! He also had a charming way about him with a fun sense of humor. Being a single sister with some health issues, I knew I could call on Dan to give me a priesthood blessing when I needed one.
I didn't know he was from the Burley-Rupert area as both my folks grew up there about the same time. That was a sweet tidbit of information that warmed my heart.
I surely have been touched with sadness at his passing but know he is being so warmly greeted by so many on the other side who are feeling great joy at the reunion. It is only a separation between family here and family there. My deepest condolences to all of Dan's family. He truly was one of a kind in the very best way.
Sincerely,
Karen Stoker

I am one of the luckiest people in the world. I had Dan as my neighbor, home teacher, and ministering brother for 23 years! I still have three Werthers candies on my counter from our last visit a few weeks ago. I also have a paper frog sitting on my shelf he made me many years ago. Last summer, while enduring chemotherapy, he showed up on my doorstep with a few groceries and 14 BOXES of Creamies!!!! He said "they cure anything ," and he was right!

I will always remember his love for Heavenly father and Jesus Christ. Hearing him pray was like listening to him have a conversation with a dear friend. I want a relationship like that someday.

I love you Dan. I will miss you. Thank you for all of your love care, and concern for me over the years
