David Olsen Obituary

David Leon Olsen

1970 - 2022

Centerville, UT David Leon Olsen was born May 20th, 1970, in Murray, Utah to Kay and Leon Olsen. He was the youngest of two. After many pain-filled years, David lost his valiant battle with non-alcoholic liver disease. He passed away on February 16th, 2022, surrounded by family and friends and a snowstorm special-ordered just for him.

He spent his early years in Holladay, Utah and later moved to Centerville. David was a daredevil at heart. He was always pulling some stunt and more often than not ended up injured. He was the "cool" skateboarder and snowboarder that the younger kids in the neighborhood looked up to.

David graduated from Viewmont High School in 1988 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Integrated Science in History, Mathematics, and Design Graphics from Weber State University. After graduating from Weber State, David worked for Taco Maker and EDA as an Architectural Project Manager. David expected a high level of design. He was loved by customers and feared by contractors. Working on the SLC airport was one of his favorite projects.

David was a proud Eagle Scout. He loved to recount tales of his 50-mile hikes and the contraband he carried in his backpack. David is one of the few Eagle Scouts who never earned a swimming merit badge. He fulfilled many extra requirements to avoid getting in the water.

In his Centerville neighborhood, David was affectionately called the Peacock Whisperer. Percy the peacock was a wild bird that took up residence in David's yard. Speaking in a whisper and softly clapping his hands, David could coax Percy into opening his feathers and parading around the yard.

David was a Comic Con nerd, an avid toy collector, and a connoisseur of music. He had more Star Wars weaponry than the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire combined. David would surprise friends with custom action figures designed especially for them. He paid close attention to off-handed comments friends made for inspiration for his custom designs. His wit and sense of humor ran deep.

X-96 was an important part of David's life. He was a proud X96 Radio All Star. He loved his role as Punk, reviewing bad movies and junk food. David wrote his reviews out in one of the many notebooks he kept on hand, later transferring his reviews to his online blog. If you need a good laugh, check out this link to his B-movie reviews along with what snacks to eat with each feature: https://punksmovies.livejournal.com/.

David enjoyed the many friends and associations he built at the station. It was always a welcome surprise over the years, when a nurse, tech, or doctor recognized David's voice, and asked if he was Punk from X96 Radio from Hell.

David is survived by his mother Kay Olsen and his sister Cindy (Wayne) McConkie. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews Audrey (Noel) Merket, Hope (Joe) Walker, Spencer (Sarah) McConkie and Mitchell (Odyssey) McConkie who he thought of as his own children. He is survived by his nieces' children Cooper, Ellen, Porter and Theo whom he adored. He was preceded in death by his father Leon Olsen and his grandparents John and Ellen Olsen and Israel and Ruby Harmon.

We would like to thank the amazing staff at Rocky Mountain Hospice, especially Bonnie and Yessica who helped keep David comfortable in his final days.

Punk sends his love and is signing off.

Sorry to hear about his passing. His quirky reviews of really terrible movies helped make X96 and RFH what they are today.

I looked up to cousin David growing up, and cherish the time I got to spend with the family visiting Leon, Kay, David and Cindy through the years for holidays. His talents were many and his wit had me rolling, especially on the radio in the mornings. Thanks for being so patient with me while Erin, Michael and I were growing up. You will be greatly missed.

So sorry for you loss. I only know Punk from RFH and enjoyed him so much over the years. He will live on in his awesome reviews of off-beat movies and junk food.
