Dorene Squires Obituary

Dorene H. Squires

1938 ~ 2023

South Jordan, UT-Dorene was born on February 19, 1938 in Logan, Utah to Floyd Daniel and Meda Staley Hansen. Their home was on the Logan River close to the River Heights Bridge. She had many fond memories of her early years where she learned hard work in the garden with her mom and dad. Dorene, having both an older and younger brother (Keith and Brent), liked to think she was a bit spoiled as the only girl. She attended Wilson Elementary School, Logan Jr. High and Logan Sr. High School. She graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in education from Brigham Young University. She later obtained her Master's and Administrative Degrees in education from Utah State University.

Dorene was an excellent ice skater and told stories of skating each night at the Logan Ice Rink in Central Park and then walking home with her friends. She was very accomplished in vocal music where she sang the lead roles in many high school productions. She was a talented pianist with special skills in conducting choirs and composition. She composed many special musical productions for the schools where she taught. Many of her songs have been produced and shared with others. One special song she composed was the baptism song which has been sung at most grandchildren's baptisms.

Throughout her professional career, Dorene was an accomplished educator. Her career consisted of both teaching and administration. She was an elementary school teacher, a title one specialist and a principal in the Granite School District. She also served as a stenographer, executive secretary and seamstress in her early years.

Dorene's hobbies have included handicrafts of all kinds, sewing, ceramics, painting and quilting. She lovingly made quilts for every one of her children and grandchildren. She was involved in social and civic activities including Women in Construction, Delta Kappa Gamma and was President of the Utah Appaloosa Horse Club.

On August 3, 1956 Dorene married Norman Squires in the Logan Temple and they embarked on a 67 year wonderful adventure. Three children were born to this union - Steven Norman Squires (Caryn), Shauna Smith (Michael), and Stacie Juretich (Jeffery) who all share the same birthday - May 17th (not triplets - all different years). They have been blessed with 10 grandchildren & 25 great-grandchildren with one more due in June.

Dorene and Norman have been a well-known musical team and have been involved with many major choral productions, several of which were conducted at the Mormon Tabernacle. With this special musical background, they were called on three assignments to the BYU Jerusalem Center in Israel (2004-2005, 2008-2009 and 2012-2013). Dorene as the conductor, and Norman as the organist, have been involved with choirs and other musical assignments for their entire time together.

Dorene has always had a very special talent as a teacher. She loved to teach Gospel Doctrine - especially from the Bible. She served in the church curriculum department where she and her team developed the new "Star A" lesson manual. Dorene (with Norman) served eleven missions starting at the Jordan River Temple where they served as ordinance workers and supervisors of the temple organists. They served at the Conference Center giving tours and as ushers for General Conference and other activities. Between the 3 Israel missions, they served with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in their general offices, followed by an assignment at the Global Service Center. They served for two years at the Church Employment Center and another two years at the Riverton Family History Center. Her latest assignment has been as a Relief Society President at the Jordan River Branch which is an assisted living and memory care facility.

Dorene was preceded in death by her father Floyd Daniel Hansen, mother Meda Staley Hansen, brother Keith D Hansen, (sister Clara Ane Hansen who died shortly after birth) brother Brent Floyd Hansen, and great-grandson Samson Robert Cornwell.

Dear Norm and Family: we are so saddened by this news and our hearts and love go out to you at this time of loss. In our family we have learned over the past 18 month how important it is to mourn with those that mourn and to comfort those that stand in need of comfort through the losses in our families. We have witnessed the Lord's hand in all these things. From the savior's own lips he uttered, "Blessed are those that mourn, for they shall be comforted". I truly believe that and I am a witness to that. So, at this time we mourn with you and we love you and Dorene. We know we will meet again. With love, your friends, Luke and Bonnie McDermott

We had the great privilege of being welcomed and treated so well at the BYU Jerusalem Center when we had the opportunity to fill in for a Spring /Summer program. Remarkably talented couple who even allowed us and many students to pound on some keys when they played the Carillon Bells at the YMCA in Jerusalem. We have been in their beautiful home since and their absolutely magnificent yard. I know this will be such a hard time for your family and especially for Norman and we send you our love and appreciation for your friendship and are so sorry for your loss.

What a Wonderful obituary, for an equally wonderful, amazing, talented, beautiful woman. I love Dorene so much! She was such a bright light in the world! I am certain she shines ever so bright in the heavens above! As she watches over all of us. Thank you Dorene, for your example, and your unconditional love, I will miss you, but I know that the veil is very thin, and you will be close by!!! Norman, Heavenly father must have needed her, Always remember she might not be present physically, but she is ever so present spiritually! It is my hope that this truly will comfort you during the days ahead. I am so sorry for your loss. You are an amazing team! May you continue to be! Sonda Sommer :)
