Dorothy Angell Nordgran Wiscombe Mecham

Dorothy Mecham Obituary

Dorothy Angell Nordgran Wiscombe Mecham 1918 ~ 2008 Our beloved Dottie passed away June 25, 2008 at the age of 89. She was born on July 13, 1918 in Salt Lake City, to Charles Edgar and Mabel Gardner Angell. Dottie grew up in Magna, Utah. Dottie married Al Nordgran in 1943 in San Francisco where he was in the Navy and served in World War II. After the war they lived in Magna, Utah where Al was a County Sheriff. Dottie was a career woman. She worked as a buyer and traveled yearly to the New York garment district and to European fashion shows. She also was the manager in a number of exclusive retail stores in downtown Salt Lake City; The Paris Company, Salt Lake Knit and Castleton's. Al died in 1963 and Dottie moved from Magna, Utah to Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1964, she met and married Ronald Wiscombe, who owned a painting business and was very involved in politics. Dottie retired from the retail business and began working for the Salt Lake County Assessor's Office so they could spend weekends at their cabin in Porter Fork where she loved to entertain family and friends. She was the life of any party. Ron and Dottie also enjoyed traveling throughout the world. Although Dottie never had children of her own, she was very close to Ron's children from his first marriage. Ron died in 1979. In 1981, she met Ralph Mecham and they married in 1985. Together they enjoyed dining out, visiting friends and passing out Christmas breads and goodies. Ralph passed away in June 2003. Dottie then moved to Legacy House and later Garden Terrace where she resided until her death. She suffered in her last years with the debilitating effects of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. The family would like to thank all the many caregivers for their loving care and support. Dottie is survived by many who were truly blessed to have known this gracious, elegant lady. Although she lost a lot of people she loved, she always smiled, laughed and made everyone she met feel special. If all step-mothers were more like her the world would be a much better place. She is survived by her step-children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Three of whom, Margaret Wiscombe Olsen, Gayle Van Valkenburg McHenry, and Curtis Oberhansly served as co-guardians for the last several years of her life. In lieu of flowers it is suggested that you make a donation to the Alzheimer's Association. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 30th, 12 noon at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Drive, Salt Lake City. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service 11 a.m.

I am friends with Gayle Van Valkenberg's family - we grew up on the same street. My family knew Dottie and I recall my Mom purchasing a dress from her when she was at Castleton's - she could sell anything to anyone and make you feel like you were the most beautiful person in the world! What a Lady! I regret not getting to know her better. But I am glad I know a few of her nieces and nephews. All very wonderful family! I am sad at her passing but understand too, that she is in a much better place with her memories in tact, being welcomed by her family......

I remember Dottie well for all the years she worked for The Paris Co. for my father, Charlie Baldwin. As a child and growing into a woman, whenever I visited 'the store', Dottie always greeted me with a big hug and kiss. She and Betty S. were my role models for glamorous, very stylish and sweet ladies. Dottie was truly a special lady and her smile will light up the heavens forever as one of the brightest stars! Although her final disease was devastating to her and her family and friends, we can all remember her for the great lady she always was and always will be!

Every year in July, I would see Aunt Dorothy (Dottie) at Grandmother Angell's birthday celebration. I was always excited to see her because she would always greet you in a sweet and caring way. I went to see her at the care center a while back and that same beautiful smile she always exhibited was still with her.
