Professor Firmage was called affectionately "Big Ed" by many of us students who marvelled at his intellect. He taught my international law class, and a research paper I did for his seminar on jurisprudence became a year long research project in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Archives under the supervision of then Church Historian Leonard Arrington. My Utah Law Review article became a source for the book Zion in the Courts co-authored by Firmage and Professor Collin Mangrum of Creighton University Law School, another former Firmage student. Professor Firmage also gave me a recommendation letter to the Air Force JAG Corps for a scholarship toward my LL.M. degree at George Washington University in environmental law, beginning my 35 years of practice in that field, most of it involving the nuclear weapons he had a deep interest in, and teaching it at St. Mary's College of California, Utah Valley University, University of Idaho, and Washington State University (since 2010). I think every student he taught can affirm the significance of the things we learned from him, and how we have passed it along to our own students and colleagues in our work ever since.

Ed was one of my law professors at the University of Utah, 1970-72. I was a staunch Republican back then. After decades of law practice experience, I am now staunch Democrat, with much appreciation to Prof. Ed Firmage.
