Eli Mitchell Obituary

Eli Taylor Mitchell

2009 - 2022

- Eli Taylor Mitchell passed away unexpectedly on April 26, 2022 at the age of 13, following a tragic auto-bicycle accident in West Jordan, Utah. Eli was riding his bicycle home after buying treats at a local grocery store.

Eli was a kind, fun-loving young man who had many friends. Eli loved outdoor activities including snowboarding, riding ATVs, mountain biking, camping, video games, and airsoft wars with his friends. He was an avid reader which gave him an extensive vocabulary envied by the adults around him. Spending time with his family was so important to him. He was very close to his 16-year-old sister Emma.

It is impossible to capture the essence of Eli in words. He was, from birth, a special boy full of quirky confidence. He embodied a balance of seeming paradoxes. Eli was authentically thoughtful of others while at the same time not giving a second thought to fitting norms or external molds. On any given evening, Eli would be playing Halo at one moment and then snuggling into bed with his favorite stuffed animals the next. Eli worked hard and was incredibly responsible while at the same time finding great enjoyment in the simple pleasures of life like delicious (and often unhealthy) favorite foods like candy, Coke, and pie. He was truly his own person and rose above the surface cares of the world. Eli gave great care to include others and to let them be their unique selves, not expecting them to be anyone other than who they were. Eli knew how to handle challenges, fix anything, and simply figure life out. Eli and everyone around him had confidence in his ability to problem solve and deal with life's issues. He was sensitive yet bold, respectful yet not passive, organized and playful. He expected great things of himself.

While grieving, the family takes comfort in knowing that we will see Eli again and that he has been reunited with Grandma Carol and other family members. Eli was a person of great faith and wise beyond his years. Hopefully others will benefit from this tragedy as Eli was an organ donor.

We are so grateful for the village of family, friends, ward members, and neighbors that have helped us raise Eli and are supporting us as we celebrate the life he lived. The outpouring of love has been overwhelming to our family and we are forever grateful.

Eli belongs to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He knows who he is. He knows God's plan, and so do we. That brings immeasurable comfort as we say goodbye for now. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. - John 3:16

Parents Jeremy and Lisa Mitchell, and the entire family, wish to express gratitude to the bystanders who tried to revive Eli along with the outstanding service beyond the call of duty from the West Jordan Police Department, paramedics, doctors, and nurses. We will be forever grateful to the many unknown individuals who tried to assist him and recognize this likely had an impact on them. We express great appreciation to the Wurth Group for their support. We want to thank the many coworkers, vendors and customers for their kindness. We also wish to thank the community for their great outpouring of sympathy and support to our family.

Eli's memory will forever be cherished by his parents Lisa and Jeremy, his sister Emma, his grandparents Toni and Glendon Mitchell and Randolph Taylor, as well as many cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandmother Carol Taylor.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 2 at 11:00 a.m. at the West Jordan River Oaks Stake Center, 8950 S 1300 W, West Jordan, UT 84088. Viewings will be held at the same location on Sunday, May 1 from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. and May 2 from 9:15 to 10:45 a.m. Interment, West Jordan City Cemetery.

I had to read about Eli for my Drivers Ed class. I just want to say that it had me in tears. Me and Eli would be around the same age. He was in my same city, my same religion, everything. I felt so connected to him, but I felt the hand of the Lord on me. I know you will see him again. He's not gone forever.
