Elma Whitesides Obituary

Elma C. Whitesides "Together Again" Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend, Elma Cheney Whitesides, passed away peacefully in her sleep December 3, 2005 in Bountiful, Utah. She was born on August 14, 1915 in Burley, Idaho, the sixth of seven daughters and one son of Elam George and Louise Whittaker Cheney. Elma was educated in Cardston, Alberta, Canada. She was a very talented, cultured and elect lady. At the age of 12 she started her talent of fashion design, sewing and tailoring. She designed and made many of her family's clothes and furnishings. Elma also created ethereal "Cheney Original" wedding dresses (free of charge) for many young women married in the LDS Temples. She was a renowned designer, decorator and mural artist. During World War II she worked for Boeing Aircraft Co. in Seattle as an accountant and bookkeeper. She also traveled the world for business and pleasure. Elma worked in public relations for many years, sacrificing much to provide many special opportunities for her family. She and her husband Joe Edward Whitesides were active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-days Saints, the Old Main Society at USU, and helped sponsor the annual Joe E. Whitesides scholar/athlete luncheons. Elma was a faithful member of the church, and devoted decades in the MIA and various other callings. She wrote, directed, and made costumes for many award winning road shows and musical productions. She leaves a legacy of diligence in temple service, for literally thousands who will rise up and call her blessed. She was preceded in death by her siblings and her dear eternal companion, Joe E. Whitesides. Elma is survived by their children; Melody Starmer (Dean) of Castro Valley, CA; Lana Foley of Las Vegas, NV; Colleen Tibbets (Tim) of Tracy, CA; Kim Whitesides of Salt Lake City and Jill Whitesides of The Woodlands, TX. Elma was blessed with nine loving grandchildren, six precious great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Her presence will be greatly missed in all of our lives. Funeral services and visitation were held on December 9, 2005 at Lindquist's Bountiful Mortuary. Internment followed at Kaysville Cemetery. e-mail condolences to [email protected]
