GLEN POWELL Obituary

Glen S Powell 1917 ~ 2011 Glen S Powell, 93, peacefully passed away at the Highland Care Center from natural causes, just after midnight, Friday, January 14, 2011. He was born February 8, 1917 in Salt Lake City, Utah to John William Powell and Emma Swedenborg Powell, the second of three surviving sons in the family. He was a tall, handsome man who was very intelligent, kind, sociable and an exceptionally hard-working achiever. Glen graduated from West High School, Class of 1934, and was the chairman of their 50th class reunion in 1984. He met his sweetheart, Leone Jeffs Powell, while dancing at the original Saltaire Resort on the shores of the Great Salt Lake. After a romantic courtship of two years full of fun, love, dancing and togetherness, they were married in the Salt Lake L.D.S Temple on November 2, 1937. They were blessed to have two sons, Glen Lynn Powell and John (Jack) Leland Powell who was born when Glen was away serving in the U. S. Navy during World War II. Their 61 years of marriage was a storybook romance of genuine love and devotion that was an example of the true meaning of being married both to their children and their grandchildren. Glen began working at an early age and contributed to the family's welfare as an assistant to the custodian at the neighborhood school, and also worked a number of part-time jobs while completing high school. After high school, he began full-time employment at a dairy farm in Rupert, Idaho, milking and feeding cows, caring for the milk, and stacking hay, etc. Upon returning to Salt Lake, he worked at the downtown Walgreen's Drug Store, Peterson's Dairy, and was hired by the Continental Oil Company (Conoco) in 1936. He started in the warehouse and worked his way up through managerial and executive positions before his retirement , which concluded over 50 years of employment with Conoco. Glen was an active member of the L.D.S. church and served in a variety of callings and positions including Elders Quorum President, Sunday School Superintendent, and the Stake High Council. One of the highlights of his church activity was when he and Leone served for eight years as Stake Dance Directors, a calling they thoroughly enjoyed. He was a good father and provider for his family. One of his priorities was to arrange his schedule so he could always be home to eat dinner with them. It was also important to spend time with his family on vacations, fishing trips, and one-on-one time with his two sons and wife. They spent time developing hobbies such as gun collecting, model building, bird hunting, house painting, gardening and model-train collecting. He was very generous and unselfish to others and shared freely of what he had. He is survived by his son, G. Lynn (Linda Haehle) Powell; daughter-in law, Kristine Brock Powell (Gary) Sandquist; six grandchildren, Lynn and Linda's surviving child: Jennifer Powell (Jim) Andrus, Salt Lake; Jack and Kristine's children: David (Andrea) Powell, Michael (Michelle) Powell, Scott Powell, Diane Powell (J.J.) Mirci and Jeffrey Powell all of Salt Lake; one grandson-in-law, Clayton (Melinda) Gillett of Seattle, Washington; and 13 great grandchildren; brother: Wayne Powell; sisters-in-law: Ruth Jeffs Atkin, Sandy, and Greta Jeffs, Anchorage, Alaska; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Leone; a son, John (Jack) L. Powell; a granddaughter, Julianna Powell (Clayton) Gillett; two brothers: Alvin and Douglas. Glen's family is truly thankful for his life of love, kindness, devotion, support and unselfish generosity. Also, for the wonderful example he was to us and others. He will be missed but always loved and remembered forever. We are blessed with the knowledge that he is having a wonderful reunion with the loved ones who have passed on before him. A special thank you to Dr. Mary Jane Norman, all the nurses and staff of the Highland Care Center, especially Joann, Maren and Eddie who have cared for him the full five years that Glen resided there. Their care, help, kindness and support were necessary and greatly appreciated. We will never be able to thank and praise them enough for all they did to make his life there as pleasant and comfortable as they could. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 19, 2011, at 12:00 noon in the Salt Lake 29th Ward (Riverside Stake Center) 1100 West and 500 North. A viewing will be held Tuesday evening, January 18, 2011, at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 255 South 200 East, from 6-8 p.m. and at the ward from 10:30 to 11:30 prior to the service.
