HERSCHEL HARWARD Obituary

Herschel John "H J" Harward 1919 ~ 2011 Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away Sat. 19 Mar 2011 surrounded by his loving wife and family in Salt Lake City, UT. Born 7 Nov 1919 to Amasa and Hannah Harward in Aurora, Utah, eighth of 10 children. He spent his youth farming with his dad and brothers, graduating from North Sevier High School in 1938. Attended Metropolitan School of Business in Los Angeles, Utah State University and BYU. Served in US Navy 1941-1946 during World War II. Married the love of his life Karla C. in Sept 1948 in the Manti Temple and raised his family in Aurora. Employed at U.S. Gypsum in Sigurd; farmed part-time with his sons; owned a small dairy and was a part-time insurance agent, winning many awards. Loved to work and showed his children how to work hard and have fun. Family moved to SLC in 1970 where he was employed many years as office manager at Construction Realty. An inspiration to many, he always set the tone with a funny joke or experience. Active as a High Priest in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in many callings: ward clerk, stake missionary and scouting program. He also loved time spent with Karla doing sealings in the Jordan River Temple. He was an avid sports fan of Utah Jazz and BYU. He always watched out for his "Karla-baby" who he loved and admired dearly; she was the center of his life and loved her more than anything else. Preceded in death by parents, sisters Gwen (Elmer) Nelson and Monida (Fred) Frey (DeLloyd) Christensen, and brothers Bill (Verba), Lalan (Eva), Neal (Blanche), Bernard (Marti), Jess (Bess), and Verse. Survived by his wife Karla, daughter Cheri (Andy) Schmidt and sons Dennis (Beverly), Kelly (Leslie), Karl (Celeste), 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and four on the way. Viewing: Fri. Mar. 25, 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Sat. Mar 26, 9:45-10:45 a.m. Funeral services: Sat. Mar. 26, 11:00 a.m., Olympus 2nd Ward LDS Chapel, 3070 East Nila Way (4170 South). Burial: Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 1700 East 3300 South, Holladay, Utah. Condolences may be offered at www.memorialutah.com. We wish to thank the entire staff at Spring Creek Care Center for the love and support shown to Herschel.

Karl and family. I am sincerely saddened about the death of Karl's father. I only met him once or twice, but Carisa and Maddi talked about living with him and Karla. You each were there for me when my father died, and I wish I could be there for you now. I know he is healthy and happy now and you will see him again.

I know his son Kelly who is an excellent example of the type of caring person we should all strive to emulate. Herschel "H J" probably had a lot to do with setting an example for all family and friends that he was around.

We will miss you grandpa! You always had a garden, the mower, or the ball game on. You also took time to show how much you cared. You sure did like your cheese, even with a bowl of ice cream!
We wish we could be there for you grandma. We are there in Spirit and prayer. Hope you can feel of our love and wish you much peace.
