Ivan Hope Obituary

Ivan N. Hope 1927 ~ 2008 Ivan Nephi Hope, our loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-grandfather, passed away on September 2, 2008 at home in Bountiful, Utah from heart failure. Ivan was born October 15, 1927 to James Eli and Emily Hope in Rexburg, Idaho. He grew up on the family farm and at age 17 and enlisted in the Merchant Marine at the end of World War II. He began attending BYU where he met his sweetheart, Marilyn Tingey. They became engaged and Ivan was drafted to serve in the Korean War. Following that service, Marilyn and he were married on October 16, 1952 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Ivan graduated from BYU and began his professional career with Shell Oil in California. He later moved the family back to Utah, working for Sperry Univac and then for the LDS Church from where he retired. A farm boy with a strong attachment to his Idaho upbringing, dad possessed a delightfully dry sense of humor. His strong work ethic blessed the lives of many indeed. He served faithfully in various church callings including Executive Secretary, Bishopric Counselor, Bishop and High Councilor. In 1993, Dad and Mom served a wonderful fulltime mission in the Washington D.C. North Mission. Dad also served diligently for 10 years in the Bountiful Utah LDS Temple. Dad cherished time with family and was always supportive of the many athletic games, musical concerts and other performances. Camping, football games, traveling, household repairs, tinkering with a "find" from the D.I. and just being with mom were his passions. It never was difficult to detect Dad's love for his sweetheart. Ivan is survived by his wife Marilyn, sons Scott (Cathy) of Temecula, CA, Matthew of South Salt Lake, UT, Greg (Jolene) of Cedar Hills, UT, nine grandchildren, two great- grandchildren, brothers Ross (Jean) and Arthur (Golda). He was preceded in death by son Roger, parents, and brothers Lester and Grant Hope and sister Jenny Rindlisbacher. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 6, 2008 at the Bountiful LDS 9th Ward Chapel, 585 East Center St., where a viewing will be held Friday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Saturday morning 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. prior to services. Online guest book at www.russonmortuary.com In lieu of flowers the family suggests donating to the LDS Missionary Fund.

Memories and Condolences
for Ivan Hope

Not sure what to say?

Hi everyone,
Carol and I felt sad that we were not able to be with you for the viewing or the funeral, but we want you to know how much we love you and have appreciated our friendship through the years. Years spent in Dental School with Scott and Cathy were great memories and time together at the dental office will always be cherished memories for a young dentist getting started. Our prayers, condolences and best wishes to you all at this time. Time is a great healer but the loss of such a great man will be difficult. As you know my dad passed away 3 years ago and I still think of him everyday. The lessons he taught are timeless and so it is with Ivan. He will be remembered always for his wonderful contributions to family and friends.
God bless and keep you in his arms.
Love,
Steve and Carol Sperry

Many sons and husbands and dads and grandpas and brothers and uncles earn love and respect from everybody but very few do it so skillfully as my uncle Ivan. I say skillfully but I really mean “naturally” as it has come so easily to him. All the roles he willingly took upon himself and mastered will bless him forever. And we, the family and friends are and remain the beneficiaries.

I for one look forward to the grandpa Hope reunions we will hold through the eternities and I know that Ivan and Marilyn and my cousins will all show up with matching T-shirts and warm the place up.

Maybe you don’t have the HOPE name but with him you are family anyway. . . and I’m sure you know that. I wish more of you could have had him in your lives since you were little boys and girls as I had.

My thoughts are with us all, especially Aunt Marilyn and my cousins and their families… and I will miss him for a time… but my only true sorrow is for anyone who does not understand and grasp the knowledge that we will all be back together again real soon.

Love to you all

We were saddened by the Passing of Bishop Hope, He was a most amazing man, so kind and gentle and wise. Ivan was the Bishop of my youth, and was always an inspiration to me, one of a handful of individuals that I wanted to pattern my life after. May the Lord Bless and comfort his wonderful family. With Love and great respect.

Dearest Marilyn, Scott, Matthew, and Greg. Please accept my most sincere apologies for the passing of Ivan. My deepest sympathies, prayers, and love are with you at this time. The time I had to meet, talk with, and get to know Ivan made it clear that he was (and still is) a very special man. I pray that you may all find peace and healing in time to come. My prayers are with you and blessings all the more. God be with you all.

I want to let you know what a great man Ivan was. I grew up with him in my ward. He was a great example to me and my favorite bishop. He was always there and seem to have the right thing to say to a troubled teenager. He will be greatly missed.

Dearest Marilyn, Scott, Matt, Greg and Families,
It is impossible to put into words how we love Ivan, no one could have been a better brother. We have so enjoyed the times we been with you over the many years. Marilyn, we will need to talk twice as much on the phone now.

There is a little saying by Wordsworth that I have always liked
"There is a comfort in the strength of love that will make a thing endurable, which else would overset the brain or break the Heart.l"
Also, a quote from Pres. Henry Eyring, "I testify that by the Spirit of Christ and by the Holy Ghost, you may walk confidently in whatever difficulties will come...You need never be discouraged or afraid. The way through difficulties has always been prepared for you, and you will find it if you exercise faith."

We know all this is easier said than done, but what a great comfort this can be. We love you all, Ross & Jean

It was obvious to us that Ivan was a giant of a man. His gentle nature and kind disposition were apparent from the first time we met him and continued to be confirmed over many years of enjoying his company at church meetings, court of honor gatherings, and sporting events as he visited Greg, Jolene, and the kids in Cedar Hills. God bless your entire family at this time of mourning. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Respectfully,
Blair and Katie Van Dyke
