Jimmie Cates Obituary

Jimmie Darrell Cates 1938 ~ 2007 Jimmie Darrell Cates, age 68, passes away peacefully with his family gathered around him, on May 18, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer. Jimmie was born July 8, 1938 in Kilgore, Texas, to James Maldon and Ollie Mae Cates. Jimmie moved throughout the south as a youngster until his family settled in Pleasant Grove, Utah where he attended his senior year and graduated from Pleasant Grove High School. He met his Sweet Shoppe Sweetie, DeLene Storrs, and they were married on August 16, 1957, and made their home in American Fork. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Jimmie's life reflected his devotion to family, church and friends, and he always stood for hard work and integrity. He lived his belief that others' needs come first! He served in many church positions, including Bishop of the American Fork 12th and 22nd Wards, and was devoted to the best interests of the citizens of American Fork. He showed us how to lead a good life by his quiet example and strong belief in the Lord. While he is greatly missed by all, the wonderful memories will live forever in our hearts. Jimmie is survived by his Sweetie of American Fork; and their five children: Connie (Lynn) Roe, and Craig (Virginia) Cates, South Jordan; Darrell (Annette) Cates, American Fork; David (Suzanne) Cates, Saratoga Springs; Denise (Robert) Welcker, Cedar Hills; 18 grandchildren, four great-grand-children and four more on the way. Survived by three sisters in Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister. Funeral Services will be held Tues, May 22, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the American Fork 12th Ward, 673 E. 300 No. Friends may call Mon. from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Anderson & Sons Mortuary, 49 East 100 North and Tuesday at the church from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the services. Burial in the American Fork Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent to andersonmortuary.com

For more then 10 years Jimmy has been selling my family our cars. I've always enjoyed visiting with him when I was at the dealership. I always appreciated the way he took care of our needs. He would talk a lot about his grandkids and his family get togethers. I could tell he really loved his family. I'll miss seeing him at work but we know he is in good hands.

Dear Utah Cates Family,
I am the oldest Cates left of our family.Jim & I grew up together. His dad, Uncle James, & my dad, Joe, were always very close. They worked in the oil fields & shipyards, always hard construction work. They made a good living for their families. I have so many special memories of Jim & Edna-growing up out in the country in Tx. Jim & I raised rabbits. They lives out on a prairie like place & when the animals dies, we always dressed up & put then in boxes & had funerals. Jim was the preacher. We'd sing, pray, cry,& put flowers on their graves. Our g-gr.Hines & g-gr Derrick lives there. Jim came to Tx. to baptize my dear husband & he & Delene were with us as we were sealed in SL temple. We visited back & forth thru the yrs. & kept up with each other. When his parents died within a few yrs. of each other-he came both times & spoke at their funerals. He was a devout LDS. I'm thankful & proud to have him as a cousin. He was a most special person, family man & good friend to all. May his love ones find comfort in the knowledge that he's happy & free of pain & worries. Love always, Syble Jo Cates Midkiff

I only met Jimmie in the last year as my council member. He was kind, and thoughtful, and generous with his time. Most of all, he clearly cared about the American Fork neighborhoods. I am truly grateful that American Fork City was touched by his leadership. To his family - thank you for sharing him with the community.

Jimmie was the oldest of us kids, and I did not grow up with him as I was the youngest child. And me and his son Darrell are the same age so this lets you know how many years we were apart in age. But even with all the years between us, my brother was still a big brother to listen to me give me advice, never a loss of his temper, set such a good example for me. I loved when we had our talks and his talks about mom and dad and Edna. Jimmie and Edna was the oldest out of us 5 kids and they were very close and he had a lot of tales about her, and she had a few about him also. My brother babtized me when he was down, so no matter how many years and how many miles between us he still played a big brother as best as he could with me and my other sisters Mona and Cheryl. We know our brother is in Heaven with our lord Jesus Christ and our Mom and Dad and our other sister Edna. Knowing this makes it easier for us. Haveing lost our Mom and Dad I know how hard this is and no words can make it better, but just remember his smile, his loving touch, and he lives on in each and everyone of you, as each one carries a quality of their Dad. We may be miles apart but our love is with each one of you and we love you.

Dear Cates Family,

I had the distinct pleasure of knowing Jim for many, many years as we both worked in the food business. I first met Jim when I was a route salesman with Clover Club back in the 70's. Just like EVERYONE, I immediately grew to like Jim, enjoy his company, and look forward to stopping at Safeway. Years later, that friendship was renewed when he came to work for Clover Club. I can guarantee that there was never a person that knew Jim that did not like him. I am sad to see my old friend has passed away, but I hope there can be some comfort for his family knowing he touched so many, many lives in such a positive way.

My sincere sympathy,

Terry Jones

We were a yound family when we moved next door to the Cates family. For the next 15 years we learned alot from Brother Cates. From how to take care of mature trees and our yard .. He was older then us .. but had the energy of a young adult.. But more importantly he taught us by his example of how to be a good neighbor and a outstanding person. We will miss the "talks we had over the fence" our thoughts and prayers are with the Cates Family

I wish we could be out there with you now. Our thoughts & prayers are with you. Jimmie was such an inspiration to all of us. He was truly the patriarch of the Cates family-especially for us Texas saints. He was so instrumental in bringing my dad into the gospel & coming down here to baptize him, being at their sealing & the sealing & marriage of Walter & myself. We will miss him greatly & cherish our fond memories-both in Utah & Texas. We will see you at the end of June. We love you, Darla & Walter Clark
