Joseph Cronin Obituary

Joseph Francis Cronin, Jr. died peacefully the evening of January 26, 2014 at his home surrounded by family. Joseph was born in Salt Lake City on August 12, 1927 to Joseph F. Cronin, Sr. and Ruth Thatcher. He exhibited great wit and insight in his many letters to the editor. To the relief of many Republicans, this will serve as his final entry in The Salt Lake Tribune. He was raised mainly in Salt Lake City, although his father and mother also moved their family briefly to Washington, D.C. and San Francisco. A child of the Great Depression and a hard worker all his life, Joseph went to work at age 12 to help provide for his family. This experience left an indelible mark on his character- as he once said, "If you work harder than most and study all of your life, you will be successful."
A proud graduate of Judge Memorial High School, Joseph joined the United States Navy near the end of World War II and flew several missions in support of troops in the Pacific Theatre. After the end of WWII and his honorable discharge from the Navy, Joseph met and married Marilyn Griffith in 1949. He went to work as an airline mechanic at Hill Air Force Base, where, as a civilian, he was steadily promoted until he became a Logistics Specialist for the United States Air Force. During his 40-year career as a Logistics Specialist, he managed several programs, including the construction of the F-4 and F-16 fighter jets, and traveled the world, setting foot on all but one continent. During and after his professional career, he was active in BPOE #85, serving as Exalted Ruler and later as Grand Exalted Ruler. Joseph was a benevolent spirit and donated time and money to various charitable organizations and causes. He was also Santa Claus to thousands of children and particularly enjoyed acting as Santa for children with special needs.
Throughout his life Joseph enjoyed football, baseball and golf (both playing and spectating), skiing, fly fishing, hunting, building model airplanes, and spending time with his beloved wife. One of their greatest joys was attending University of Utah football games. They were season ticket holders for 48 years. Go Utes!
During his 63-year marriage to Marilyn, they traveled the world, thoroughly enjoying their time together and impressing many friends and family with their dancing along the way. However, Joseph considered his and Marilyn's greatest accomplishment to be successfully their raising six children.
Joseph was a loving husband, father and all-around kind and generous person and will be missed by all. In addition to 16 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and one great, great grandson. Joseph is survived by his daughters Mary Wendell (Winn), Kathy Hill (Chris), Patti Farrell (Pat), Michelle Jones (Frank) and sons Joseph F. Cronin III (Pam) and John Kelly Cronin (Gini).
An Irish Wake will be held on Thursday, January 30th At St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 3015 E. Creek Road, Salt Lake City at 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, January 31st at St. Thomas More at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 4th Ave. and "T" St., Salt Lake City.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made for scholarships for future teachers to:
The University of Utah Department of Special Education: 540 Arapeen Drive, Suite 250, Salt Lake City, Utah 84108.

Although no longer with us, I still consider Joe a close friend and think of him often. He has a special place in heaven bringing smiles and laughter to those around him. Joe continues to light up my life.

Dear Kathy: We are thinking of you fondly and with deep friendship. There is some other dimension to the passing of a Parent. It hurts in a different way. Joe Sr had an interesting and diverse life filled with travel and experiences. Now there are no parents in The Association. We are all orphans. Please give our our condolences to Patty and Joe. Love, Steve and Brenda

My sympathies and love sent to the family left here to carry on. May comfort be with you all. I am going to miss seeing Mr. Cronin walking past the house on his daily walk. He made my day when I would see him walking his dog, even though one or the other was 'a little slower' that day. A neighbor for my whole life, it will be a change to not have them there anymore. Peace and comfort to the family. RIP Mr. Cronin. I hope to have you as a neighbor in heaven.

To Joe's Family,
Joe Cronin was a kind and generous man. He holds a very dear place in the hearts of the staff and children of the special education preschool program at the Salt Lake City School District. We first met Joe as Santa when he visited our preschool special education classroom clear back in 1992. He was perfect! He was warm and loving with the children and he got such a kick out of the things they would do and say! That visit started a 20+ year relationship with Joe, and a year later, with the members of the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks. Every year Joe, his wife Marilyn, and other members of the Elks would visit our classrooms. Joe loved the children and would often play with them before handing over a donation check. These yearly donations provided much needed equipment and materials such as switch toys, adapted keyboards, computers, digital cameras and FM systems that greatly benefited the staff and children. Joe and his gang (herd?) of Elks became like family to us. We would look forward Joe's wonderful hugs and kind words. No matter how much we thanked him for the amazing help the Elks provided to our program, Joe would shrug off our words and then tell us how wonderful we were and how lucky the children were to have such great teachers. We couldn't help but love him! Our last visit with Joe was at his home where he spoke fondly of his wife and children. Joe will be greatly missed but his generosity and kindness lives on....
With all our love, Robin Rector, Merrie Smithson and the staff of the Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities.

Michelle,
I am so very sorry to hear of this great loss. A few years back my father was awarded an honorary diploma to the Judge Memorial class of 1946. He was unable to graduate because he had gone into the Navy during WW2. In any event, it was your father that went out of his way at Mass at Saint Ambrose to say to my father “Welcome to the class”. My family will never forget it.
Peace to you and your family.

Dad, thank you for being my 'go-to' guy. You are the one constant person in my life that I could always count on...even when I really messed up. I see who I want to be in your smiling beautiful Irish eyes. Thinking about you puts a smile in my heart! You were the world's greatest gentleman. I hope my children and grandchildren will carry on that tradition in honor of your memory. I am so grateful for the gift you gave us these past two weeks. I love you hugely! Rest in peace..till I see you again and , as always, GO UTES!!!

Dear Cronin Family,
We are so sorry to miss the Irish Wake and the Mass to celebrate your father's life. We were surprised to hear he was sick and happy he is now in a better place with Marilyn. We were always greeted with a smile and made to feel very welcomed by him. He spoke so eloquently at your mother's funeral and was someone we wished we had a greater opportunity to be with him over the years. Thank you all for sharing him with us. We are remembering him and each of you in our thoughts and prayers. God Bless! Dom and Ginny Albo

I was your father's secretary back in the '70s for about a year and a half. What a character. He was very nice and a wonderful person to work for. It wasn't until later in life that I realized that he was the best boss I ever had or would have. My prayers are with you and your families at this time.

We are going to miss you like crazy Grandpa! When I was little he was a gentle giant that would pick me up and I felt like I touched the sky! As I grew older, he taught me that hard work and studying would get me anything I ever wanted. He would come every year to our small town Scandinavian Festival to watch his two great granddaughters, Samantha Jo and Zoe Marilyn dance. We are going to miss you so much!

What a great man was lost today. He was such fun to talk to about everything. He had such a great memory of things right to the end. Thanks to his family for sharing him with us in the Elks organization. He loved doing for the youth thru the Elks. We will miss his guidance. Love and prayers to his family.

To the Cronin Family: I am so sorry about the loss of your father, father-in-law, grandpa and great-grandpa. He truly was a man of knowledge and lived life to it's fullest. An amazing Godfather he was, not to mention one of the most dedicated Utah Fans around! He is now up in the heavens playing Santa for all those above with Lora at his side being his special elf. I have many good memories that I will hold close and dear to my heart. His heart is no longer broken with the loss of your mother as they are now up in heaven dancing away. May all of you find comfort with each other and look up in the sky and smile while you think of the great memories you had and the wonderful knowledge he shared. He was truly a kind man. I will miss him a lot! Hugs to you all with prayers and thoughts.

I am so proud of the life you led dad; you filled every moment with love and adventure. You taught all of us how a gentleman behaves. I am particularly grateful that Sean, Colin, Michael, and Jonathan learned so much about being good men from the grandpa they loved so much. Pat reminisces about all of the times you were there for him - fixing his old Volkswagons and helping our family while Pat completed Medical School. I imagine you are dancing with an angel named Marilyn right now, the sweetest mom and grandma in heaven. I will love you forever Dad.
