Judith Capener Obituary

Judith Ann Pugh Capener

1937 ~ 2024

Judith Ann Pugh Capener passed through this earthly journey on December 13, 2024. She did so with grace, kindness, and courage as demonstrated through a decades long battle with MS.

Born on February 26, 1937, she grew up in the Avenues, where she would walk to her Grandmother's for cookies and milk, visit the Aunties, and where she made lifelong friends. She graduated from East High in 1955. That same year Judy was selected as a member of the Days of '47 royalty.

She married Earl Maeser, which brought into her life her much loved daughter Amanda. Later she would marry friend and eternal partner Ted Capener, adding sons Ted Jr. and Andrew to the family.

While the kids were in school, Judy would occasionally slip away to the slopes of Alta. She loved to ski and play tennis, and even mastered standing on her head. A move to the suburbs of Washington D.C. brought new energy and excitement as the area was charged with politics, intellectual pursuits, history and the opportunity for her to study art at the Corcoran School of Art and Design.

All the while, Judy loved being a mother and she was a very loving mother. Judy taught her children to look out for those left out, to be kind and understanding, and to build people through positive reinforcement.

She sought to beautify the world through her many talents. She was a natural artist, a musician that could play piano by ear, and a devoted gardener. She contributed hidden pictures to the Friend and Highlights magazines, and her paintings adorn many homes. She was very bright, insightful and witty - even during her physical struggles.

Judy was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Judy will enjoy a reunion with her parents Gerald and Ellen Pugh, her sisters Margaret, Susan and Lynda, and her dear son Teddy. Those saying good-bye for a short time include her husband Ted, daughter Amanda Rasmussen (Mark), son Andrew (Jenny), 11 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and siblings Doug, David and Casey, and many loved nephews and nieces.

The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the Ward, individuals that ministered to her and to Eunice Garley, who lovingly cared for her.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 21st, at 12:00 p.m. at the Holladay 28th Ward, 2625 East Milo Way, Holladay with a viewing prior to services starting at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.

Judy was a very dear friend for 80 years. We talked often and could always feel close despite time and distance. I will miss her terribly - her warmth and caring, her visual connection with the world, her stoicism when in misery, and her ready laugh.
