Kathy Sargent Obituary

Kathy Lynn Sargent
1948~2013
Park City, UT-After a valiant fight, Kathy passed away peacefully with her two sisters by her side on September 8, 2013 at home in Park City. Kathy was born in Coalville, Utah on July 29, 1948, to William C. Sargent and Evelyn Shirley Kincade Sargent. She lived in Coalville, Salt Lake City, Hawaii, Holladay, and most recently Park City. She attended Kauai High School and graduated from North Summit High School. Her senior year she lived with her grandmother Lois Copley Sargent while the family was moving back from Hawaii. She attended Westminster College and graduated from the University of Utah, with a degree in history and English. She served an LDS mission in the North Carolina Greensboro Mission from 1975 - 1977. She served as Holladay South Stake Primary President, Holladay 4th Ward Primary President, Young Women advisor, Relief Society Teacher, and various other church callings through the years. She retired from Jordan School District after 28 years of teaching. She was a dedicated and passionate teacher. Her goal was helping students to learn, not just earn a grade. She was willing to spend countless hours on her own time in reading papers and making helpful comments. At Butler she taught 7th grade Advanced Core of Reading and English; at Brighton High School Honors/AP English. She prepared and took her students to Creative Pursuits and Future Problem Solving regional and state competitions where they consistently placed with high honors. Her colleagues were an important part of her life. Book clubs and monthly dinners were something that even after retirement she enjoyed. She substitute taught in the Park City School District the last few years. Community involvement was important to her. She worked on various aspects of the Utah Symphony Guild's projects; served on the Executive Board of the Guild, was President during the 2011-2012 season and served on the Board of the Utah Symphony. She loved attending the luncheons, concerts and especially enjoyed working with the staff and Guild members. She cherished the associations and friends she met through her community involvement. She was a member of the Junior League of Salt Lake City and served as a member of the Board. The last few years she traveled to Cozumel, Mexico during the winter where she enjoyed the beach, warm weather and the company of her mother. A highlight of her time was traveling with the members of the Cozumel Ward to the LDS Temple in Merida, Mexico. She made several friends on the island as well as loving relationships with the ward members. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to her many friends and her Kimball Ward family; and for the compassionate and exceptional professional care extended to Kathy by Dr. Ina Amber, Dr. Chris Hays and the staff at Park City Clinic, the team at Utah Cancer Specialists, Audrey Stembridge and Heber City IHC Hospice. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, her brother William Leroy Sargent, her brother-in-law David A. Torres, and a grand-niece, Eliana Maile. She is survived by her sisters, Melonia Sargent Torres, Loke Sargent Allen and her sister-in-law Margaret Patterson Sargent. She received great joy from her ten nieces and nephews - Amy, Nicole, Katy, Will, Elizabeth, Jon, David, Sara Jane, Sarah Marie, Mary, and their children Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 14th at the Kimball LDS Ward, 2555 West Kilby Road, Park City at 12 Noon. Friday evening family and friends are welcome to visit with the family from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Holladay-Cottonwood Memorial Mortuary, 4670 South Highland Drive, Holladay, and from 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the church prior to services. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.holladaycottonwoodmortuary.com For those wishing, the family suggests making a donation to the Utah Symphony or American Cancer Society.

I had the privilege of working with Kathy at Brighton High School. I think because we we were "newbies" and came to BHS the same year, we became good friends. I will always remember sharing an office; her desk was so much neater than mine, having lunch and many many chats about books, travel, life, our families and of course teaching. She was a great lady and made a wonderful impact on the hundreds students who passed through her classroom. I will miss her! Take care dear friend and I will see you on the other side. Much love!

I enjoyed working with Kathy when she would bring in papers her students had written and asked me for helping in putting together books for them. I will always remember her pleasant smile and kindness.
